Pro Bono Program Supervisors
To supervise a law student pro bono volunteer, you must be an attorney at a nonprofit organization, a governmental agency, a private attorney engaged in the provision of pro bono services or a law school faculty member.
All pro bono work done by student volunteers must be law related and include tasks such as interviewing clients and witnesses, drafting documents or legislation, doing legal research or law reform projects, or assisting at trials or administrative hearings. The time commitment and type of work can vary. Student volunteers are typically available from late August to November and mid-January through April, though a limited number of student volunteers may be available during the summer months and/or over the winter and spring breaks.
If you would like to request a student volunteer(s), please complete the Request for Pro Bono Assistance Form. Completed forms can be emailed to lawprobono@virginia.edu or submitted by fax to (434) 924-3945. Pro bono opportunities will be publicized to students through e-mail alerts, and interested students will submit their resumes to the Pro Bono Program. The resumes will be reviewed and forwarded to the project supervisor, who will then contact the potential volunteers to discuss the project. The supervisor and the student volunteer must sign the Pro Bono Volunteer Agreement before any work on the project can begin. Supervisors are expected to provide adequate training and supervision for all student volunteers. At the conclusion of the project, supervisors will need to complete and sign an hours log and evaluation form from each student pro bono volunteer.
