The Law School's website address is www.law.virginia.edu. A host of information and services are available through this web site to both incoming and returning students. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with this website. It contains services you will find invaluable during your studies at the Law School, as well as a listing of upcoming events and important announcements.
The Law School's Information Technology & Communications (Law ITC) department supports information systems and the computer lab within the School of Law used by the faculty, students and staff. The University Information Technology & Communications (UVa. ITC) department provides computing help to all University students (including Law) for email service, email clients and the home directory service. Students should check the UVa. ITC's web site www.itc.virginia.edu for more complete information about additional technical services and support. We listed some quick links to technical resources at the bottom of this page that Law School students may find helpful.
Electronic Mail
Electronic mail in an important means of communication between the Law School and all it's students. It is vital that your email account and password be established as soon as possible. The Law School will send email messages to your U.Va. email account. If you forward your U.Va. email account, you are responsible for any errors resulting from the forwarding or with accessing the other email system.
One of the first things new students should do when they arrive at the Law School is get their U.Va. accounts going. Before students can gain access to their password for their computing/email account they must pass the Responsible Computing Quiz. The quiz is based on Responsible Computing: A Handbook for Students. Please note that the quiz is a "secure" document. After accessing the URL for the quiz, press "continue" within the gray box that will appear. If you have problems with either the entry of your personal info (like date of birth or SSN) or the quiz questions, please contact the UVa. ITC Computing Help Desk at 924-3731.
Please remember that the Responsible Computing Quiz can be taken from any of the Law School PACs (Public Access Computers). PACs require no login. PACs can be found on the 1st and 2nd floor of the library. The Responsible Computing Quiz can also be taken during the early part of the Fall term in the Law School computer labs. A temporary account ID and password will be posted in the labs.
Electronic Mail Systems Available For Law School Students
The University of Virginia ITC provides access to a variety of electronic mail (email) systems for the use of faculty, staff and students. Mulberry, Web Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird are electronic mail (email) clients for wintel-compatible and Macintosh microcomputers. There are also several Unix mail packages on the University's IBM RS/6000s and Sun workstations. The email standard in use at UVa. is SMTP.
To send and receive email, you need access to a computing device that is connected to the University's data communication network (i.e., a computer lab machine, public access computer, or your notebook computer with a wired/wireless ethernet card). You will need an account to access a computing device that supports the use of electronic mail. Only Law students have access to use a networked microcomputer in the Law School computer labs. If you are an incoming student, you must first take and pass the University's Responsible Computing Quiz to receive the password to your UVA email account. Please note that the Responsible Computing Quiz can be taken from any of the Law School Public Access Computers (PACs) found on the 1st and 2nd floor of the library and in the Slaugher Hall computer lab. With a UVa. email account, you then need to choose an email client to read your email.
If you need further assistance in registering for electronic mail, please contact the UVa. ITC Help Desk via telephone at (434) 924-3731. If you have specific questions about actually using your selected email client, you should contact the UVa. ITC Help Desk by telephone or by sending an electronic mail message to consult@virginia.edu
Law School NT & LawWeb Accounts
After you have passed your Responsible Computing Quiz, the Law School will automatically create two additional accounts and passwords for you. The first account is a Windows NT account at the Law School. This account allows you access to the Law School's computer labs as well as student printing. The second account created is for LawWeb. LawWeb is the Law School's secured intranet site. Career Services(CASE), exam information, student photos, course materials, news and announcements are but a few of the services that can be found on LawWeb.
Both Law School LawWeb and NT accounts are created nightly. When they are created, students will receive an email notification within one (1) business day after they pass the Responsible Computing quiz. The notification will be sent to their U.Va. registered email account. Remember that these accounts will not be created until the next business day after they complete the Responsible Computing Quiz.

ISIS
ISIS is the University's Integrated Student Information System. Students use ISIS to access Student Accounts and Financial Aid information & grades. For more information on ISIS and how to access it see ISIS.
Home Directory Service
The Home Directory Service is a very highly recommended U.Va. ITC central repository for personal file storage. You can save, store and access files (whether you are using a computer on-grounds or off-grounds) on a central file service. These files will be accessible through multiple platforms from any computer connected to the UVa network (Law School labs, notebooks w/ethernet cards or modems). The Home Directory is a virtual file cabinet where you can store papers, notes and class outlines online. For more information, please see: http://www.itc.virginia.edu/unix/homedir/
By using home directory service (HDS) in combination with CD-ROMs & USB memory sticks, students should never lose important papers, notes, class outlines and personal files. All students need to backup information and avoid any need for data recovery services. Data recovery services are not provided.
SERVICES
Printing
Law students can print from one of the Law School maintained labs. Notebook users with a network connection (wired or wireless) can conveniently print to any Law School maintained printers. See Student Printing for a full explanation of how student printing works and what is required of you before you can print from your laptop or the lab.
Viewing Course Materials On Line
Many of the course materials presented on the web will be stored in a number of word processing or software formats, including Adobe Acrobat PDF, WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel. Depending on the web browser that you use, and the type of file posted, you may need a plug-in to display the contents of certain types of files. If you use the Internet Explorer web browser, you do not need either the Microsoft software or the viewer in order to see Microsoft attachments.
Internet Access on the Law Grounds
The Law School provides wireless network access for students, in addition to the wired access already available from many locations in the library.
The University ITC help desk will route students with wireless installation questions to Law ITC.
