Prosecution Clinic: Best Court Days by Jurisdiction
Note: Everyone must go into his or her assigned field office at least one day per week, but most offices prefer and highly recommend (some virtually require) that you go in two days a week — one for court, and one day for preparation.
Best Court days for various jurisdictions in the Prosecution Clinic:
Albemarle County — Generally there is some kind of docket happening every day.
The General District Court docket is Monday mornings (traffic), Tuesday afternoons (misdemeanors), and Friday mornings (traffic). (They may be trying to reduce the number of Commonwealth cases on Mondays though.)
Prelims in General District Court are on Thursday mornings.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations: Domestic violence and adult family/household cases are Monday mornings. Juvenile delinquency cases are Wednesday afternoons.
Circuit Court is on Tuesday mornings and all day Wednesdays. Usually there is no Circuit Court on Fridays.
Amherst County — General District Court is Tuesday and Thursday, generally 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is Monday mornings and Wednesday mornings and afternoon.
There is no court on Fridays unless there is something going on in Circuit Court.
Augusta County — Tuesdays and Thursdays are the best for General District Court. Wednesdays and Fridays are the best for Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court (but the last Friday of the month is an admin day).
Buckingham County — General District Court. meets (only) on every Friday morning; the criminal docket is usually wrapped up by 1 p.m.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is held every first, third and fourth Tuesday of the month.
Circuit Court is held intermittently as needed.
Charlottesville City — General District Court is Monday and Friday, both are great days.
Wednesday morning is only bond hearings; citizen warrants are scheduled on fifth Mondays and Fridays.
Culpeper County — General District Court is on Mondays, Wednesday and every third Thursday (maybe only VASAP cases on Thursdays) of the month. There is no General District Court on Tuesday or Friday.
Mondays seem the best.
Fluvanna County — General District Court is on Tuesdays, generally only in the mornings.
There is no court on Mondays and generally no court on Thursdays. Sometimes Circuit Court is held on Thursdays.
Goochland County — General District Court is exclusively on Mondays. There is no court on Wednesdays.
Greene County — General District Court is on Wednesdays. Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is Thursday.
Circuit Court is Tuesday.
There is typically no court Monday and Friday.
Harrisonburg — (see Rockingham and U.S. Attorney W.D. Va)
Henrico County — The best court days are Monday and Friday and may have intern mostly in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. This is definitely a two-day-per-week jurisdiction; it is especially important to be able to go in on Mondays first semester.
Louisa County — Tuesday and Thursday are General District Court. Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court meets Monday and Friday. Wednesdays are sometimes open; other times there are Circuit Court proceedings.
Lynchburg — There is generally some court in General District Court or Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court every day of the week.
Madison County — General District Court is held on Thursdays.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is held on intermittent Mondays and Fridays of each month.
Circuit Court is held every Wednesday.
Tuesday has had no court in session, and most Mondays and Fridays there is no court.
Orange County — General District Court is held on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is held on Monday mornings.
Circuit Court is held on Thursday and Friday, and some Mondays.
Richmond City — There is court in Richmond on almost every day.
The best days for General District Court are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Since Richmond requires two days a week, going in on Monday and Wednesday or Thursday to get some time to prepare for cases is recommended.
The best Circuit Court dockets are also Tuesday-Thursday. Ideally, interns should be there at least one day in the middle of the week in order to get good cases.

Rockingham County / Harrisonburg — For General District Court, Tuesday and Wednesday are best. Tuesdays are for private complaints in afternoon (often shaky legal basis but good experience); prelims are Tuesday mornings and some on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons.
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court is held on Tuesdays (juvenile) and Thursdays (adult/domestic).
There are regular Circuit Court dockets on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Mondays are for Circuit Court misdemeanor appeals and grand jury. There is sometimes Circuit Court on Wednesday but this is rare.
Staunton — General District court is held on Wednesdays and Fridays. There is no day of the week where there is not some court in session. While not required, a prior student felt that two days per week strongly enhanced the experience. J&DR meets on Mondays. Monday and Wednesday seem to be the best days.
U.S. Attorney Eastern District of Virginia — Richmond — The best days for magistrate court in the Eastern District are Monday and Tuesday. If interns want to actually participate in a court proceeding, they should plan to come to the office on a Monday and/or Tuesday. On Tuesdays, Judge Dohnal hears the ticket docket, and interns have an opportunity to help with this docket. There are no days that there is no court, but Mondays and Tuesdays are by far the busiest days in magistrate court. It is highly recommended that the clinic intern go in two days a week for this office.
U.S. Attorney Western District of Virginia — Charlottesville — Magistrate's court occurs on the second Thursday of each month in Charlottesville. While random hearings and initial appearances pop up from day to day, there is nothing else officially scheduled on a daily basis. The grand jury generally meets on Wednesdays.
U.S. Attorney Western District of Virginia — Harrisonburg — The first Tuesday of every month is for the petty offense (magistrate) docket.
Waynesboro — General District Court meets on Monday mornings (misdemeanor and traffic) and afternoon is the felony docket (prelims). Two days a week strongly recommended
Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court meets on Tuesday mornings.
Wednesday and less often Thursday are typically taken up by Circuit Court proceedings, and Friday is usually advisements in the morning, if anything.
