2000s Class Notes

2000

Amy Ashton Shaw
has joined Givaudan Flavors Corporation as associate general counsel, where she focuses her practice on contracts and transactional matters. She and her husband, Tony Shaw, were married on November 10, 2007. The wedding party included Lizanne Waldner Renaud. The couple lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.

BeardSean M. Beard has made partner at Hunton & Williams. He is a member of the firm’s business practice group based in Richmond, Va., where his practice focuses on advising large and small corporate clients in formation, governance, reorganization, mergers and acquisitions, and securities law. In 2007, Beard was named a Stakeholder 100 Award Winner. The diversity award for top-performing lawyers in the U.S. was given by a selection committee of more than 20 general counsel from major corporations.

Amy Becker Strauss and Marc Strauss welcomed their second child, Adam Brand, on March 14. Their older son, Ethan, turned 3 in September. The family resides in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Sean Fairweather recently joined Axiom in New York. He was previously the director and counsel of the Securitized Products Group at UBS AG. Axiom is a new model firm that empowers its attorneys and clients by changing the way they work together.

GiurintanoKandice Giurintano has been selected to serve a one-year term as website vice-chair of the commercial transportation litigation general committee, a division of the tort trial & insurance practice section of the ABA. Kandice is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, post-trial and appellate practice committee, as well as the Dauphin County and Lebanon County Bar Associations.

Robert Keeling was made partner with Sidley Austin in their Washington, D.C. office. His practice is in litigation, focusing on trial litigation.

Steve Leasure recently accepted a position with HealthSouth Corporation as Director, Corporate and Securities. He is leaving Hunton & Williams and Charlotte, where he has practiced since graduation. His wife, Kerry, and daughters, Annabelle and Dot, look forward to making a new home further south and reuniting with several other Law ’00 ex-pats in Birmingham, Ala.

Shaheen Sheik has released her second album, “Revolution.” Her first, “Rock Candy,” was released in 2005 and has garnered both critical attention and radio play in California as well as video rotation on MTV Desi. Los Angeles Star 98.7FM radio station fans honored Sheik as a Top 10 finalist in the 2007 Unsigned Artist Search.

We are sad to report the loss of a good friend and classmate, Jonathan H. Siegelbaum. Jon passed away on October 1, due to complications arising from heat stroke suffered while running a half-marathon. While at the Law School, Jon was a Notes Editor for the Virginia Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif. Following law school, Jon clerked for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl on the First Circuit and practiced at WilmerHale in Washington, D.C. Most recently, Jon served as Counsel to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. He was also an active member of the Obama campaign.

  More important than his professional accomplishments, Jon was a proud father and husband. He and his wife, Elizabeth Frazier (Darden ’99), were married while Jon was in his second year at the Law School. After Jon’s clerkship, they settled in Bethesda, Md., and started a family, with two young children, Ava (5) and Elliot (2). We will all remember Jon for his easy­going nature, his dedication to a career in the law and public service, and his commitment to his family and friends.

Jud Turner, along with several partners, formed a new company, Georgia360, to provide fully integrated public affairs services to corporate and association clients across Georgia. The firm’s staff is based in both metro Atlanta and coastal Georgia, providing strong public affairs coverage across the state. Turner most recently served as executive counsel to Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue, where he advised the Governor on the full gamut of executive branch legal matters, including issues related to the state budget process, judicial appointments, government procurements, education policy, retirement pensions and other post employment benefits, ethics and litigation.

Brian Wise’s son, Cole, turned two this March and the family is expecting another child this fall.

2001

Christian Atwood
made partner at Choate, Hall & Stewart in January. He and his wife, Susan, together with recent arrival Griffin Charles Atwood (their first child) make their home in the Roslindale/ West Roxbury neighborhood of Boston.

Tess and Matthew Bosher had their second child, Flannery Tucker (“Annie”), on February 6. She joins her big sister, Jane Clare, who turned 2 in January. The family relocated from Alexandria to Richmond in September, where Matthew joined Hunton & Williams.

Allison Buchko Edgar and her husband, Jonathan Edgar, had twins in April. The couple welcomed Jenna Virginia and Bryson Harlan Edgar to their family.

Howard W. Chang received the 2008 Angela Lloyd Book Award from the Classical Association of Virginia for dedication and excellence in teaching. He has taught for five years, and currently teaches at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va.

Ingrid Fuquen and Aaron Zeisler ’99 were married in Charlottesville on June 7. They live in New York City, where Ingrid works in the Legal Department at BlackRock and Aaron is a litigation partner at Satterlee Stephens Burke & Burke.

Gunes Hopson is now director, assistant general counsel with Capital One in Richmond, Va. He was previously vice president and assistant general counsel with Wachovia Securities.

LeaderSusan Leader has joined Dreier Stein Kahan Browne Woods George as an associate in the Los Angeles office, where her work focuses on commercial litigation. Before joining the firm, she was an associate at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Elizabeth Lemond McKeen practices law in the Newport Beach, Calif., office of O’Melveny & Myers. She is in the class actions group, where her focus is on financial services litigation. She and her husband welcomed a baby girl, Caroline Elizabeth McKeen, on October 17, 2007.

Will Olson and Alison Perine ’03 were married on June 28, in Simsbury, Conn. Patrice Hayden ’02 was a bridesmaid in the wedding. Tom Bayliss ’03, Kandice Horsey ’03, and Kena Njoya ’02 also attended the wedding. The groom is an attorney with Bryan Cave in Washington, D.C. The bride is a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The couple currently resides in Alexandria, Va., and Milford, Conn.

Beppy Owen has joined the Orlando office of Akerman Senterfitt. She practices in the corporate group, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.

In January, Monica Welt was promoted to counsel at Crowell & Moring in Washington, D.C., where her practice focuses on environmental tort litigation and product liability counseling.

2002

Alexandra Dell’s feature, “Deconstructing Carmel” was published in the May 19 issue of Newsweek. Dell, who resides in New York, continues to work for Greenstreet Films in addition to writing.

Neely Fedde has accepted a new position with the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas, clerking half time for Chief Judge Kathryn H. Vratil and working half time as the Court’s public outreach coordinator. She was previously a business litigation associate with Shook, Hardy & Bacon in Kansas City, Mo.

After serving two deployments as an infantry platoon commander in the United States Marine Corps (most recently along the Iraq/Syrian Border), Kris Hrones has accepted a position as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Kris and his wife, Annette, moved from San Diego to New York City this summer.

Robert B. Williams, Jr., and Quynh Nguyen welcomed their first child, Robert B. Williams III (“Trip”), on November 19, 2007. Baby, mom, and dad are all doing great. When not changing diapers, Rob works as a tax associate in Sutherland’s Washington, D.C., office.

Edwards2003

Jack and Kelley (Riddle) Edwards welcomed their first child, John Saul Edwards III (“Trey”), on February 10. Trey was born weighing 7 pounds, 6 ounces, and measuring 20 inches. He met several of his parents’ Law School classmates at the five-year reunion in May, and he attended his first UVA football game in October. Orange and blue are already Trey’s favorite colors and he is destined to be a Wahoo one day.

Ferris Hussein left the Department of Justice to take a position as the chief legal advisor to Iraq’s Minister of Justice, working out of Baghdad.

JessupEdyn Jessup and Beat U. Steiner ’80 have published Commercial Leasing in Colorado: A Practical Guide (Bradford Publishing). Steiner is a partner and Jessup an associate in the Boulder, Colo., office of Holland & Hart, a firm of 450 lawyers with offices throughout the Rocky Mountain region.

Bryan Johansen has been promoted to shareholder at Parr Waddoups Brown Gee & Loveless in Salt Lake City, Utah. He is a member of the firm’s commercial litigation group, focusing on intellectual property and issues related to the Internet and e-Commerce.

Crystal Lovett-Tibbs has been involved with Senator Obama’s Presidential campaign since the announcement of his candidacy on February 10, 2007. She currently serves as president of St. Louis for Obama, is on the leadership committee of Missouri Women for Obama, and is co-coordinator of Young Lawyers for Obama-St. Louis.

Jason Piche and his wife, Catherine, welcomed their first child, a daughter, into the world on October 27, 2006. Lyra Grace Piche is now a very active toddler and “provides non-stop entertainment.”

Stacey L. Rose recently became engaged to Daniel F. Harris, a family medicine resident at Georgetown University.

Andreas Stargard is with Howrey in Washington, D.C., where his practice focuses on antitrust litigation. He has purchased an old row house in the Bloomingdale area of Washington, has two dogs (a Bouvier des Flandres and a Wheaten Terrier) and still drives the same car.

Karl Trunk worked as a Signal Corps officer in the United States Army from 2003 to 2007 and spent most of that time stationed in Seoul, Korea. He now lives in the Washington, D.C., metro area and does consulting work for Booz Allen Hamilton.

After four years in the Washington, D.C., area, Jonathan Woodruff and his wife, Melissa Rose Woodruff, moved back to Charlottesville in December 2007, when Melissa joined the capital markets group at McGuireWoods.

2004 Reunion Year

Jeff Barnes recently joined the Houston office of Jackson Lewis, where he practices labor and employment law.

HowzeIn an August edition of Massachusetts Lawyer’s Weekly, Yalonda Howze was one of 25 young attorneys named a Rising Star of the Massachusetts Bar, and was honored in the Up & Coming Attorneys feature of the publication. Howze, a litigation associate with Mintz Levin in Boston, is a board member at the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and has taken on pro bono work that’s made an impact in two significant civil rights cases.

After three and a half years of practicing in the corporate group of Skadden Arps’ London office, Kevin Maxwell has relocated to Skadden’s Washington, D.C., office. He started work on April 1, after taking a month-long holiday in Africa.

Mark Sigrist and wife, Sara, welcomed Gabriel Stuart Sigrist on June 25.

2005

Jennifer DeLeonardo and Adam Frey were married on June 30, 2007, at Jenn’s parents’ home in Milford, Conn. David Tonini served as a groomsman, and Kieran Brenner provided the music for the ceremony. Nilla Watkins, Brooke Purcell, John Winn, and Kerem Turunc also helped celebrate. Jenn and Adam have been living in Melbourne, Australia, since August 2007, where Jenn is an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell and Adam is a policy analyst at the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council. They welcome alumni to visit them in Melbourne.

RobertsMyles D. Roberts has joined Potter Anderson & Corroon in Wilmington, Del., and has been admitted to the Delaware Bar. He is an associate in the firm’s corporate practice group and counsels Delaware businesses on corporate law and governance issues. Before joining Potter Anderson, he was engaged in private practice and focused his practice on public finance transactions.

Davene Swinson married Barry Wayne Walker, Jr. on May 17.

Caceres2006

Fernando Caceres LL.M. has left the Peruvian Competition Agency, where he served as Commissioner of the Free Competition Commission for the past two years, to open his own practice on trade regulation affairs. Likewise, he is currently delivering a grant from the International Development Research Centre (Canada) and teaching Competition Law at the Postgraduate Program of Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas.

Sean Cameron recently accepted a position as an associate at Davis and Gilbert in New York, where he will focus on general commercial and copyright litigation.

Caroline Geiger is soon to enter her third year as a corporate associate in the New York office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges. Caroline spent nearly two years in Weil Gotshal’s litigation and regulatory department, where she worked primarily on intellectual property matters. In April, she joined Weil Gotshal’s new technology & intellectual property transactions practice group, where her practice focuses on complex licensing and technology transactions.

Jacque Hartley is now an associate in the corporate group with Dow Lohnes in Atlanta, Ga. She was previously in the corporate group of King & Spalding.

Thidaporn Sirithaporn LL.M. is now a lecturer of law at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand. In June, she was appointed assistant course director for the LL.B. (Graduate Program); this program is a fast track intensive law degree program specifically designed for individuals who already hold an undergraduate degree in a field other than law. Most recently, Sirithaporn has been project researcher for the Thai Ministry of Commerce on topics relating to potential reforms of Thai domestic regulations relating to free trade.

Napatporn C. Tongbai LL.M. passed the judge selection exam in Thailand in July. She will be appointed as a judge trainee at the Court of Justice in October.

Jennifer Wine, a soon-to-be third year associate in the Washington, D.C., office of Weil, Gotshal & Manges, was recently profiled in Legal Bisnow’s “30 Under 30” report. Legal Bisnow.com is an electronic publication that profiles attorneys, law firms, and legal issues in the Washington region.

2007

Anna Markham joined the media, information, and technology practice group at the Washington, D.C., office of Dow Lohnes. She also became engaged to William Sanders on April 24.

On September 10, Everton Morris began his career in private practice as a labor and employee law associate at the Morristown, N.J., based McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter, following his judicial clerkship.

Albert “BJ” Stieglitz, Jr., married Amanda J. Scovil on October 6, 2007, at Duke University Chapel in Durham,

N.C. The bride is currently employed as a physician’s assistant with University Cardiothoracic Surgical Associates, and the groom is a clerk for U.S. District Judge John G. Heyburn II of the Western District of Kentucky. The couple resides in Louisville, Ky.

Balserak2008

Daniel E. Balserak became an associate with Sullivan & Worcester in September, in the Boston office.

Katherine Crockett has joined Spilman Thomas & Battle as an associate in the firm’s Charleston, W.Va., office. She primarily practices in the area of environmental litigation.
