2000

Marc A. Cohn has joined Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C., as counsel in the intellectual property practice group, where he focuses on medical device litigation and arbitration, including patent infringement, contract, and business tort cases. He was previously with Howrey.

Eric Conn has joined Epstein Becker Green as a member in the national labor and employment practice in Washington, D.C., where he will lead efforts to provide occupational safety and health services to the firm’s clients. He was previously a partner with McDermott Will & Emery.

Kandice J. Giurintano '00Kandice J. Giurintano has been selected as the Dauphin County Bar Association Pro Bono Attorney of the Year. She is a member with McNees Wallace & Nurick in Harrisburg, Pa. She co-chairs the appellate and post-trial practice group and is part of the litigation and transportation, distribution and logistics groups. Under her leadership, 75 attorneys and staff members at McNees participated in various pro bono projects in 2010.

Khaled John Klele'00Khaled John Klele has been elected partner with Riker Danzig Scherer Hyland & Perretti in Morristown, N.J. He practices in the complex commercial litigation group, where he focuses on contract, construction, corporate governance, and employment disputes. Klele also has expertise in wrongful termination and non-compete actions.

Amy Shaw '00Amy Shaw and her husband, Tony, welcomed their first child, Bradford Lloyd, on July 3. Bradford was born at 27 weeks, 2 days. He weighed 2 pounds, 11 ounces, and measured 14 ¾ inches. He was in the neonatal intensive care unit at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, for two and a half months. “We welcomed him home on September 13,” Amy writes, “and he is thriving.”

2001

Ben Block '01Ben Block has been promoted to partner at Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. He has extensive experience in civil litigation, including as a first-chair litigator in state and federal court trials and appeals, and in arbitrations. He regularly advises the NFL regarding issues relating to its collective bargaining agreement, as well as in other matters. Block clerked for Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Ryan Coonerty '01Ryan Coonerty is currently serving as the mayor of Santa Cruz, Calif. He is also the co-founder and chief strategist for NextSpace Coworking + Innovation, which was named the 2010 Santa Cruz Small Business of the Year.

Michael J. Hendershot has earned certification from the Ohio State Bar Association as an appellate specialist. He is an associate in the Columbus office of Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease, where he is a member of the litigation group. He focuses his practice on appellate issues, amicus work, products liability, and insurance law. Hendershot was named an Ohio Super Lawyers Rising Star in appellate law in 2010 and 2011.

Brian Keyes has been elected partner with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati in Seattle, Wash., where he practices corporate and securities law.

Joshua N. Silverstein '01Joshua N. Silverstein has been admitted to the partnership of Stradley Ronon Stevens & Young in Cherry Hill, N.J. He is a member of the business practice group, where he concentrates on mergers and acquisitions, contract negotiations, and general corporate counseling. Prior to joining Stradley Ronon, he was a licensed insurance producer for Allstate Insurance Company.

Justin Sizemore has joined Reed Smith as an associate in the commercial litigation group in Richmond, Va.

2002

William W. Bos has been promoted to partner with Vinson & Elkins in Houston, Tex., where he concentrates his practice on commercial lending and financial transactions.

Jeremy Gott '02Jeremy Gott has been elected partner at Baker Botts in Dallas, Tex., where he focuses his practice on commercial leasing and real estate acquisition and development.


Guy Maurice '02Guy Maurice reports that his baby is no longer a baby—her second birthday has come and gone. Gigi enjoyed cake and a baby piano. “Next year,” he notes, “she’ll probably appreciate another child being there!”

Guy has joined Baker Martin Capital, a boutique merchant bank in New York City, as a managing director.

Nicole M. Murray '02Nicole M. Murray has been named a Rising Star in Illinois Super Lawyers 2011. She is an associate with Quarles & Brady’s intellectual property group in Chicago and focuses her practice on intellectual property litigation.

Cynthia Orchard has two young children and has lived in El Salvador since August 2007, where she is mostly a full-time mother, though she also made time to serve as a program officer with the Center for Exchange and Solidarity’s International Election Observation Mission from October 2008 to October 2009. Orchard plans to move to Kazakhstan in September, where her husband will be working at a British school, and will continue to be a full-time mother for a while longer.

Chad Romey '02Chad Romey and his wife, Carly, announce the birth of their first child, Catherine June, on August 19. The family resides in Fort Wayne, Ind., where Chad is with Blackburn & Green.



2003

Geoffrey D. Fasel was promoted to shareholder with Polsinelli Shughart in Kansas City, Mo. He focuses his practice on corporate representations for public and private companies, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Matthew Houtsma is an adjunct professor in the University of Denver’s graduate tax program. He also litigates tax court cases on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service.

2004

Jared J. Garner recently joined Carlson Hotels as associate general counsel in Carrollton, Tex.

Ben Oxley left K & L Gates to open his own real estate investment company, EcoRentals, which will be making environmental upgrades to properties and renting them out in the Washington, D.C. metro area.

Justice Jan P. Patterson LL.M. of the Texas Court of Appeals was recently elected to membership in the American Law Institute. The institute is composed of lawyers, judges, and law professors and is the leading independent organization in the U.S. producing scholarly work to clarify, modernize, and improve the law. Justice Patterson has been an appellate judge for 12 years.

Samuel Sheldon has joined Gunster in Miami, Fla., where he will concentrate his practice in the area of business litigation.

Tigerron �Tiger� Wells '04Tigerron “Tiger” Wells received the 2011 Jonathan Jasper Wright Award from the University of South Carolina’s Black Law Students Association. The award, named for the first African American to practice law in South Carolina and the first African American elected to any appeals court in the nation, is given to an outstanding member of the South Carolina legal community. Wells is with Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd in Columbia, where he is a member of the public finance team, helping counties, municipalities, and school districts issue bonds as a means to finance various capital projects.

Robin Zimmerly married Jason Meidhof on October 17, 2009, and left private practice to work in the Office of Enforcement, Division of Investigations at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The couple met while racing bicycles and return to Charlottesville every March for the Jefferson Cup Road Race.

2005

Christopher Calsyn has been promoted to counsel in the labor and employment group with Crowell & Moring in Washington, D.C.

Guy E. Carmi LL.M. ’05, S.J.D. ’10 has been awarded the Gorney Prize for Young Researchers in the field of public law by the Israeli Public Law Association. Carmi was awarded the prize for his doctoral dissertation, “Dignity and Liberty: Differing Approaches to Free Speech in Germany, the United States, and Israel.” His dissertation examines the question of whether freedom of expression is primarily based on the value of human dignity or the value of liberty. It also addresses the question of how relying on either of these values affects the perception of freedom of expression and its protection. Carmi is an associate in the litigation department at Lipa Meir & Co. He teaches Holocaust and the law at the Radzyner School of Law of the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, Israel.

Sarah M. Hall serves on the advisory board of the Children’s Law Center in Washington, D.C. The center partners with pro bono attorneys to offer comprehensive legal services for at-risk children and advocates for changes in the District of Columbia’s laws, policies, and programs. She is an associate in the litigation practice group of Covington & Burling’s Washington, D.C., office.

In 2009 Corwin Levi left an associate position at Wilmer Hale to focus on his career as a visual artist. His work has been featured in a number of shows, including one in September at Second Street Gallery in Charlottesville that sprang from the artful doodling on his law school notes. A number of shows are scheduled for 2011. Levi works from time to time as counsel in the Clarity Law Group, a virtual law firm with a conference hub in Washington, D.C. Robert E. McGrail is director of legal affairs at DUMAC, a professionally staffed investment organization controlled by Duke University. He lives in Cary, N.C., with his wife and child.

Brian T. McLaughlin has been promoted to counsel in the government contracts and litigation groups with Crowell & Moring in the Washington, D.C. office.

2006

Diego I. Blanco Carrillo LL.M. '06Diego I. Blanco Carrillo LL.M. and Alejandra Bartlett had their first son, Diego, on January 3. Carrillo continues to work as a senior associate for Ritch Mueller, www.ritch.com.mx, a Mexican law firm specializing in finance, securities, and mergers and acquisitions transactions.

Tiffany M. Graves was selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Mississippi Bar’s Leadership Forum. Candidates were chosen based on their demonstration of outstanding leadership qualities and service to their communities. The forum prepares Mississippi lawyers for future opportunities in leadership roles. Graves practices in the Jackson office of Corlew, Munford & Smith, concentrating on litigation.

Juan Manuel Pinzon LL.M. recently left Citibank-Colombia, where he was vice presidente assistant, to join Proteccion de Riesgos PR Asesores de Seguros as a partner. Proteccion de Riesgos PR is dedicated to insurance brokerage and risk management consulting for individuals and companies in Colombia.

Ignacio Salvarredi LL.M. '06Ignacio Salvarredi LL.M. married Cecilia Diaz de Souza on December 6, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In attendance at the wedding were Patricio Pablo Pantin LL.M., Lars Rueve LL.M., Fabian Osswald LL.M., and Hector Calero Ramirez LL.M.

John Sherman is graduating from Darden in May and moving to Charlotte, N.C., to join Wells Fargo Securities Investment Banking Division in their new industrials group.

After finishing his six-month internship in the European Commission data protection unit, Olivier Winants LL.M. has started work as a political advisor for the United Left Group in the European Parliament in Brussels. He is mostly active within the committee for civil liberties, justice, and home affairs, and the committee for internal market and consumer protection.

2007

Kelly A. Booker has joined Blank Rome as an associate in the real estate group in the New York City office. She focuses her practice on domestic corporate real estate transactions, including commercial real estate development, leasing, mortgage releases, purchases and sales, UCC foreclosures, fund formations, and loan financing and restructuring. She was previously with Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.

Elisabeth “Lisa” Shu serves on the advisory board of the Children’s Law Center in Washington, D.C. The center partners with pro bono attorneys to offer comprehensive legal services for at-risk children and advocate for changes in the District of Columbia’s laws, policies, and programs. She is an associate with McKenna Long & Aldridge, where she focuses her practice on appellate, federal regulatory, and administrative matters.

Stephanie Ullman Grau and her husband, Eric Grau, welcomed their first baby, Willow, on October 25. Willow weighed 7 lbs., 11 oz. and measured 19 ¾ inches long.

2008

Frankie T. Jones, Jr. '08Frankie T. Jones, Jr., was recently selected for the first class of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Leadership Academy. He is also on the executive board of the Friends of Center City Park and the executive council of synerG, an organization of that promotes social and professional networking and leadership opportunities. In 2010 Jones was recognized by Triad Business Journal in their annual “40 Under 40” Leadership Awards. He is in the Greensboro office of Smith Moore Leatherwood in the litigation and real estate practice groups, where he focuses primarily on land use.

Sinead N. O’Doherty has joined Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson as an associate in the Charlotte, N.C., office. She clerked for the Honorable Richard L. Williams ’51, U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, and for the Honorable Robert B. King, U.S. Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit.

2009

Karin Agness and a conservative campus organization she founded called Network of Enlightened Women (NeW) were featured in the blog POLITICO in March. In NeW’s annual online contest, women nominate men who act like gentlemen in the traditional sense, opening doors for women, helping them carry things, holding umbrellas over them in the rain. Agness told POLITICO that NeW aims to encourage gentlemanly behavior on campus. It’s about “appreciating men who are respectful and courteous,” says Agness. She founded NeW while an undergraduate at UVA because she wanted to be part of a conservative women’s group in which she could share her traditional cultural and political values. The organization has grown from a book group to 24 chapters on campuses across the country.

Allison Davis '09Allison Davis has joined Dinsmore & Shohl as an associate in the Cincinnati, Ohio office. She is in the mass tort practice group and represents a broad range of complex civil litigation matters, including pharmaceutical, real estate, and energy litigation. She was previously with Baker Botts in Houston, Tex.

Colin LeCroy '09Colin LeCroy has joined Jackson Walker as an associate in the litigation section in the Dallas, Tex., office.



2010

James B. Bailey has joined Bradley Arant Boult Cummings as an associate in the Birmingham, Ala., office, where he is a member of the bankruptcy, restructuring, and distressed investing practice group.

Christopher Harding '10Christopher Harding has joined Tonkon Torp in Portland, Ore., as an associate in the business department.



Andrew L. Howlett is an associate in the tax department of Debevoise & Plimpton in New York City. “Every morning,” he writes, “I do wind sprints across the 59th Street bridge in preparation for when I can play softball again.”
