1961

Judge Ronnie A. Yoder, Chief Administrative Law Judge at the U.S. Department of Transportation, has created a website honoring his father, Raymond Abraham “Ray” Yoder, a graduate of Goshen College and the University of Virginia, and a nationally known art educator, award-winning watercolorist, and professional painting instructor for over 30 years.Photos of Ray Yoder’s artwork, as well as the text of Judge Yoder’s commencement address to Goshen College on April 26, 2010, may be found at www.rayyoder.com.

1962

Mandeville A. Frost has been very ill. He recently suffered a heart attack and has been making progress in rehab.

1963

Thad G. Long '63Thad G. Long has been named a 2011 Birmingham Lawyer of the Year in antitrust law by Best Lawyers. Long, a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings, was the one lawyer in Birmingham to receive the designation in antitrust. Long focuses his practice on high-stakes litigation and transaction work. He was also selected for inclusion in Alabama Super Lawyers 2010 for business litigation and in Best Lawyers in the areas of alternative dispute resolution, commercial litigation, franchise law, and land use and zoning law.

1965

Peter A. Arntson writes that he has had the pleasure, as one of the four trustees of the Claude Moore Charitable Foundation, of making the foundation’s contribution to the University of Virginia Claude Moore Medical Education Building, which was dedicated on October 9.

Michael E. Callaway has been appointed by the Tennessee Supreme Court to again serve on the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility. Callaway has also served on the Board of Law Examiners since 1989.

Martin E. Simmons '65Martin E. Simmons has joined Stites & Harbison as counsel in the Nashville, Tenn. office, where he is a member of the real estate and banking service group. He focuses his practice on representing owners, developers, lenders, contractors, and architects of complex real estate projects. He was previously a partner with Dearborn & Ewing.

1966

G. William Birkhead reports that he is finally an empty nester; his last child graduated from college in May. He’s looking forward to a great reunion in 2011. He is a partner with Vandeventer Black in the Norfolk, Va., office, where he concentrates his law practice in commercial transactions and maritime matters.

1968

Robert Pannell is an adjunct professor at Emory Law School, teaching venture capital transactions and lecturing on legal opinion practice. He is a partner with Nelson Mullins in Atlanta, Ga., where he practices corporate and securities law.

Bob Pearson retired from the Foreign Service after serving as U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and director general of the Foreign Service. He is president of IREX, an international charity in Washington, D.C., with a focus on education, civil society, and free media development.

Gail Starling Marshall of Rapidan, Va., has been named as the recipient of the 2011 Powell Pro Bono Award by the Virginia State Bar in recognition of the pro bono services she has provided to the poor and disenfranchised throughout her career. She recently became a certified master naturalist and celebrated her 45th wedding anniversary. Starling Marshall has also been selected for inclusion in 2011 Best Lawyers in appellate law.

J. RUTLEDGE YOUNG, JR. ’68J. Rutledge Young, Jr., holds grandson, Benjamin, on his baptism day. Sons, Simons and Rutledge (both UVA graduates), and grandson, Henry, gather close by. Young and Rutledge practice law together at Duffy & Young and Simons is an architect with Thompson Young Design, all in Charleston, S.C. Young concentrates his practice on complex civil litigation and business disputes.

1969

In recognition of William K. Diehl Jr.’s support and generous gift to the Central Piedmont Community College Paralegal Program, the program bears his name. The William K. Diehl, Jr. Paralegal Program, ranked among the top programs in the nation, served 720 students this year. Diehl has a keen interest in education. He is a lecturer and teacher in the areas of trial practice and family law, and served on the Law School’s Alumni Council.

Diehl has been selected for inclusion in North Carolina Super Lawyers 2011 and was named among the Legal Elite by Business North Carolina 2011. He is a partner with James, McElroy & Diehl in Charlotte.
