1970
Neil McBride has been named Ashley T. Wiltshire Public Service Attorney of the Year by the Tennessee Bar Association. The award honors an attorney who works with an organization that provides legal services for the poor. McBride began his legal career with Ralph Nader in Washington, D.C. In 1978 he founded Rural Legal Services of Tennessee, which he directed until it merged with other firms to form the Legal Aid Society in 2002.

Thomas H. Bottini has been inducted as an honorary member of Saint Louis University’s Alpha Kappa Epsilon-Zeta Chapter in recognition of his contributions to international business in the St. Louis, Mo., community. Alpha Kappa Epsilon is an international business honor society organized for educational, scientific, and charitable purposes. Bottini is a partner in the international practice group at Armstrong Teasdale where he advises clients on manufacturing and high-technology investments in other countries, establishing representations and distributorships abroad, and in the legal, tax, and practical business details of international trade and investment.
Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania Ronald D. Castille was recently elected to the board of directors of the Conference of Chief Justices. The conference, which includes chief justices from the United States, Puerto Rico, American Virgin Islands, Guam, and the Northern Mariana Islands of the Pacific Ocean, discusses issues of local judicial concern and advocates before the federal government on issues of federal-state coordination concerning state judicial issues.
David R. Johnson has been elected president of the board of directors of the Brightmusic Society of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City’s residential chamber music ensemble. He is a retired partner with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, D.C.
Edward Lowry has been named to the Virginia Business Legal Elite, the seventh year he has been recognized with this honor. He practices with Michie Hamlett in Charlottesville, where he focuses his business on statewide commercial litigation.
Christopher J. Murphy III was the subject of a cover story feature in the February Hoosier Banker magazine. The piece traces his path from law school to Harvard Business School to a career in banking in South Bend, Ind. He was barely 30 years old when he rose to a top leadership position at 1st Source Bank, where he is today chairman and CEO. Murphy is also chairman, president, and CEO of 1st Source Corporation.
The article is an extended interview in which Murphy reflects on the many rewarding aspects of a career in the banking industry. He revels in the difference he and his colleagues can make in a client’s life by offering experience, sound advice, straight talk, and by always keeping the client’s best interests in mind. He discusses the biggest challenge in banking (regulation), the transition to international banking under his leadership, and the rewards of his deep involvement in the community of South Bend.
Mark E. Sullivan testified by phone during the New Mexico legislature’s Armed Services Committee in September in support of legislation involving military personnel, custody, and visitation. In the same month he served as an advisor for the Military Custody Committee of the Uniform Laws Commission in Minneapolis, Minn., which was meeting to draft a model law for states, covering all aspects of custody and visitation when one parent is deployed. Sullivan also made a presentation on military custody legislation to the Department of Defense State Liaison Office.
More recently, Sullivan assisted in completing the draft of the Uniformed Deployed Parents’ Custody Act, which addresses deployment issues for military parents, visitation rights, electronic testimony for those who are unable to be in court, and expedited hearings so that service members can get their affairs in order before deploying. He was appointed as advisor to the committee by the family law section of the American Bar Association. Sullivan is a retired Army JAG colonel practicing family law in Raleigh, N.C.
Ronald Tweel has been named to the Virginia Business Legal Elite. It is the seventh year he has been recognized with this honor. He practices with Michie Hamlett in Charlottesville, where he concentrates mainly on matters involving domestic relations.

W. Edward Bailey has joined Wiggin and Dana as counsel in the litigation department in New York City, where he focuses his practice in intellectual property litigation. He formerly practiced at Hogan Lovells.
Jonathan Kane participated in a seminar on reaching agreements on first labor contracts featured as part of the American Bar Association’s 4th Annual Section of Labor and Employment Law Conference in Chicago, Ill., in November. His talk covered how employers or unions use power in negotiating first contracts, how to encourage cooperation between unions and management, and how to reach first contracts, from an employer’s point of view. Kane is a partner in the Philadelphia and Berwyn, Pa., offices of Pepper Hamilton, where he is chair of the labor and employment group.
Fredrick R. Tulley has been selected for inclusion in Louisiana Super Lawyers 2011 in the area of business litigation. He is a partner with Taylor Porter in Baton Rouge.

Douglas Branson LL.M.is the W. Edward Sell Chair in Law at the University of Pittsburgh. His 15th book, The Last Male Bastion: Gender and the CEO Suite at America’s Public Companies, was published in 2010 by Routledge Press. (See In Print.) Branson is a nationally known authority on corporate governance.
Ed Modell has been elected president of the International Coach Federation, an association of executive coaches, leadership coaches, and life coaches with 17,000 members in 103 countries.He also serves as ombudsman for the Maryland Judiciary, providingconfidential assistance to court users and judiciary employees.
Frank Riggs is chair of the construction practice group at Troutman Sanders in Atlanta, Ga. His son, Brock, is a second-year student at the Law School.
1976
Don Graeter has been ranked sixth among the top bank-based investment advisors in the nation for 2010 by Bank Investment Consultant, the industry’s leading trade publication. Graeter is director of investments for Central Bank in his hometown of Louisville, Ky. Luther T. Munford chaired, at the request of the chief justice of the Mississippi Supreme Court, the court’s Mississippi Code of Judicial Conduct Study Committee, which reported to the court in 2010. He also chaired the state’s Judicial Campaign Intervention Committee, on which he served along with Mike Wallace.
Bill Stutts has been admitted into membership of the American Law Institute. He is a partner with Baker Botts in Austin, Tex., where his practice focuses on corporate finance, bank regulation, and corporate reorganization.
Barry R. Kogut has been named by Best Lawyers 2011 in the area of environmental law. Kogut is in the Syracuse, N.Y., office of Bond, Schoeneck & King, where he focuses his practice on federal and state regulatory compliance and enforcement matters. He has recently counseled college and university clients on a range of regulatory compliance issues in the context of the EPA Region 2 Regulatory Compliance Initiative at institutions of higher education.
Rob Morgan retired in November after 20 years with Perot Systems and one more with Dell, which bought Perot in November 2009. He plans to spend more time on pro bono work as general counselor for the National Wildlife Refuge Association, as well as more time traveling and seeing friends.
Doug Schoettinger was recently promoted to deputy general counsel of Dow Corning Corporation. Doug joined Dow Corning, a global manufacturer of silicone and silicon-based materials, in 1994.
Brian D. Smith died suddenly of a brain hemorrhage on March 2. Smith led the London office of Goodwin Procter and was co-chair of the hotel and hospitality practice. He advised a number of the world’s leading hotel brands in complex cross-border transactions. Prior to joining Goodwin Procter as partner, he practiced with Heller Ehrman for 17 years in their San Francisco and London offices.
Smith combined pro bono work with his love of the outdoors, providing counsel to non-profit organizations dedicated to preserving open space and natural resources. He is survived by his partner, Josefina Jimenez. A memorial service is planned for June 3 in San Francisco. Joseph B. Tyson, Jr. writes that “the tradition continues.” He and his wife, Renee, met in Law School and now their son, Ben, and his wife, Katherine, are both 1Ls.

Law School Dean Morant Inspiring Citizen Lawyers
Edmund T. Baxa, Jr. ’78, LL.M. ’80 reports the passing of his brother, Phil Baxa, on November 23. “Though Phil did not receive his law degree from Virginia (he was a Tennessee law grad), he worked for UVA Law Associate Dean Lane Kneedler ’69 and was known to many of our classmates,” Ed writes. Phil was with Sands Anderson in Richmond and was the subject of a tribute in the January 2011 Richmond Bar Newsletter. He is survived by Jay, his wife of 30 years, and his daughters, Emily and Kate.
Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner founding partner Irvin V. Cantor has been named to Virginia Lawyers Weekly’s “Leaders in the Law” Class of 2010. Cantor has spent his entire 31 year career dedicated to families who have suffered serious injuries or death. He has successfully tried over 1500 plaintiff’s injury or death cases, including over 350 traumatic brain injury cases. Cantor is one of only 31 Virginia attorneys to receive the Leaders in the Law honor, and was recognized at an October reception at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond.
Christopher D’Angelo was moderator for a program entitled “Ethics: The Erosion of the Attorney-Client Privilege and the Work Product Doctrine and Its Effect on In-House Counsel” at the 2010 Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel’s Corporate Counsel Symposium held in Philadelphia, Pa., in September. The program addressed key topics, including protecting privilege globally and the impact of business versus legal roles for in-house counsel. D’Angelo is a partner in the litigation department of the Philadelphia office of Montgomery McCracken. He is also chairman of the products liability and risk management section and vice chairman of its sports, entertainment, and amusements practice.
Michael P. Haggerty has been named in Texas Super Lawyers 2010. He is a partner and head of the finance practice group at Jackson Walker in Dallas.
Laura G. Kuykendall has been named secretary of the Ohio State Bar Association Antitrust Law Section Council for 2012. She is a partner and member of the litigation practice group at Vorys, Sater, Seymour and Pease in Columbus. Her practice focuses on antitrust and trade regulation and other complex business litigation.
Joe Ryan, a partner at Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur in Columbus, Ohio, is serving as president of the International Association of Defense Counsel. At the IADC mid-year meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif., Joe’s son, Joby ’05, a lawyer at Hogan & Lovells, will be a panelist discussing issues regarding generational differences in the practice of law. Daughter Caitlin, graduate of the College of Arts & Sciences in 2001, received her Ph.D. at Ohio State University and is a professor of education at East Carolina University. Ryan’s wife, Mary Pat, also a UVA graduate, recently retired as manager of social work at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.
1979James Finn is head of the litigation department at Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt in Portland, Ore. He is listed in Best Lawyers for his work as a commercial litigator, has been identified as a “litigation star” by Benchmark Litigation, and since 2006 has been named in Oregon Super Lawyers.
Aubrey Ford III has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers 2011 in the areas of bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, labor and employment law, and legal malpractice law. He is with Cantor, Stoneburner, Ford, Grana, and Buckner in Richmond, Va.
Michael Kuhn has been named in Texas Super Lawyers 2010 and selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers 2011 in real estate law. He is a partner with Jackson Walker in Houston.
Ely A. Leichtling has been selected for inclusion in Wisconsin Super Lawyers 2010 in employment and labor. He is a partner with Quarles & Brady in Milwaukee.
