Dr. Kate Gibson and Karen Painter, therapists with UVA’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), are located at the School of Law and focus exclusively on the mental health needs of law school students.

The Public Service Center, led by Assistant Dean of Public Service Ryan Faulconer ’08, offers job placement assistance, develops and administers the Law School’s voluntary pro bono program, coordinates summer internships and postgraduate fellowships, and provides intensive career counseling to students seeking careers in the public sector.

Student Records Office

The Student Records Office under Assistant Dean for Academic Services and Registrar Jason Dugas assists students with course enrollment, coordinates the final examination process, advises students regarding academic policies and procedures, maintains official student academic records, and offers the following services:

  • provides information and Web links to transcripts, University ID cards, the Student Accounts Office, veterans’ affairs, address change form, enrollment verification and student status confirmation.
  • prepares Third-Year Practice Certificates.
  • provides information and applications for the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE).
  • posts information regarding course assignments, class cancellations, research assistant positions, academic calendars and other notices.
  • provides bar examination information by jurisdiction, completes bar certifications and moral character certifications.

The Law Library collection dates back to the founding of the University, when Jefferson assembled classic interpretations of English law such as Glanville and Blackstone.

C&C is a branch of the University of Virginia Bookstore and so has access to its main inventory. Coordinates special book orders.

Parking on Grounds is controlled by the University’s Department of Parking and Transportation (P&T). Permits are required to park in all University lots.

Student Legal Services

Newcomb Hall

Hours: Mon-Fri 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Sponsored by Student Council, Student Legal Services provides legal assistance to all University students in criminal, traffic and most areas of civil law. The attorneys provide counsel and representation, including litigation when necessary. Work-study and volunteer Law School students and undergraduate interns perform research, intake and other paralegal duties. Student Legal Services does not handle disputes between students or disputes with the University. Initial consultation free. By appointment.


University Police Department

The University Police Department provides protective service to the University community and enforces criminal and traffic laws on all University property and adjacent street areas. Department personnel also offer safety seminars and a women's self-defense course and provide a student escort service (see below).


University Registrar’s Office

Carruthers Hall

Issues official UVA transcripts, certification of enrollment letters, loan deferments, insurance discounts and letters of good standing. The Law School Student Records Office has forms to request all of these documents, delivered daily to Carruthers Hall. Students must notify this office within 48 hours if they change their local or permanent address. Students are encouraged to make address changes online, through SIS (the University's Student Information System).
