Community Engagement and Equity Office

Assistant Dean Mark C. Jefferson leads the Community Engagement and Equity Office at UVA Law. The primary goal of his office is to create opportunities to engage with one another in community that encourage students to learn to respect their differences while also learning from them. Given the wide range of backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, politics, religious beliefs and social identities co-existing in our intellectually challenging community, open-ended engagement with each other cannot help but be a benefit to our social relationships, professional development as budding lawyers, and intellectual growth.

Another way of thinking about the mission of the Community Engagement and Equity Office is to ask ourselves what are we going to do about our differences? Are we going to stay huddled in our own corners, or are we willing to risk getting to know each other and figuring out all the many things we have in common? The best answer to those questions, in a community as plural as ours is along every social register, is that we will all stand to benefit if we are willing to engage with one another in an environment that is committed to providing equal opportunities for all of us to flourish and succeed, both as unique individuals and as valued members of our community.

Community Engagement and Equity Committee

The central role of UVA Law’s Community Engagement and Equity Committee is to ensure that all students, faculty and staff are provided opportunities to succeed as individuals and as members of our community. This committee often collaborates with the SBA Diversity Committee to learn about student experiences and convey them to the administration. Lastly, the committee, on an ongoing basis, will assess ways that it can support and openly celebrate our commitment to vibrant, engaged and pluralistic community. Contact the committee at @email.
