Course Description

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. It is to bring another out of his bad sense into your good sense.” This course develops advanced verbal skills to help you discover that power in yourself. We will focus on persuasive writing, performance techniques, speaking and listening as part of a team, and the ability to handle difficult speaking situations. Assignments include presenting a persuasive speech, counseling clients, making a closing argument, speaking on short notice, and many opportunities to improve your teamwork skills. This class was designed as a follow-up course to Hallmarks of Distinguished Advocacy, Oral Presentations In and Out of the Courtroom, Persuasion, or other courses with a substantial public speaking component, and assumes some experience and comfort with public speaking. Please note that you may not take this class and Hallmarks of Distinguished Advocacy (LAW 9053) at the same time. If you would like to take both courses, please enroll in them during different semesters.

Prerequisites: (Hallmarks of Distinguished Advocacy (9053) OR Oral Presentations Outside the Courtroom (SC) (7626) OR Oral Presentations Outside The Courtroom (9185) OR Rhetoric Seminar (9031) OR Persuasion (SC) (7692) OR Trial Advocacy (9081) OR Trial Advocacy College (SC) (7637)) Because the credits in this course count toward the JD Program Professional Skills requirement, JD candidates will be given enrollment priority for this class. LLM Students with real-world experience interested in the course should request a prerequisite waiver with the instructor. Concurrencies: None
