Course Description

This course will explore various legal/policy issues arising in the context of modern, constantly evolving, genetics and genomics. No prior scientific knowledge is required!. We will shortly review the history of genetics in the United States, with attention to the incorporation of eugenic concepts into the law. Other sessions will survey the following cutting-edge topics: Genetics in the public sphere - newborn screening, DNA biobanks, population screening; genetic privacy and information control - including premarital genetic testing/screening; GINA and other genetic anti-discrimination laws related to employment and insurance; reproductive issues, including non-medical sex selection; the implications of novel genetic technologies in medical treatment (e.g., gene editing, cloning, embryonic stem cells);Torts and the Double Helix - malpractice and genetics.
