Course Description

This course is an introduction to international human rights law, covering the major legal instruments and institutions that operate on the international plane. It includes discussion of the conceptual underpinnings of human rights, the structure of the United Nations System, the major international treaties, the regional human rights machinery, and the interplay of national and international systems in enforcing human rights. It will also provide an introduction to the various substantive areas of human rights law: civil and political rights, the prohibition of torture, women's rights, LGBT rights, socio-economic rights, international criminal law and the responsibility to protect.

Final Type (if any): Flex with Paper Option

Description: Flex exam at end of semester, with paper option. Students taking the paper option must submit the paper via EXPO by noon on May 9th (the day before the last day of the exam period).

Written Work Product

2L, 3L or LLM students who intend to use the paper option toward their Upper-Level Writing Requirement must submit the "special request" form to SRO by Feb. 26, 2024. The e-form and submission instructions are available in LawWeb.
