Course Description

This elective will examine the application of the growing legal assistance mission. Topics include special education law, immigration, consumer protection law and family law and their impact to the military community. Consumer law topics will include automobile fraud, automobile purchasing, identity theft, telemarketing and internet fraud, predatory lending, and debt collection. Students will also study military issues regarding the financial impact of marriage, separation, divorce, child custody, child support, property division, and division of retired pay. Students will have the opportunity to hear from the enforcement agencies that impact Service members, such as the Department of Justice and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. This elective is recommended for anyone who supervises or practices legal assistance (BJA, Chief of Client Services, CJA, and DSJA). Students will have short weekly reading assignments (cases and/or statutes or scholarly articles) for in-class discussion.

Course Notes: The instructors for this course are MAJ McMENAMIN and MAJ BEARDEN. This course meets at the JAG School during its 4thQuarter, March 18 - May 9, 2025. Due to weather, holidays, military requirements, etc., individual class sessions at the JAG School are subject to rescheduling on occasion. The JAG School attempts to reschedule make-ups at the same day/time slot, but there may be times when a meeting session date/time will not occur in the same day/time slot. All absences must be approved by the instructor. ENROLLMENT: Students seeking to enroll in this course must complete and timely submit a request e-form to SRO (available on LawWeb). The JAG School and Law School intend to finalize the roster of approved UVA Law students for this course by February 12, 2025.
