Course Description

This course explores the substantive provisions of U.S. immigration law and the procedures for deciding immigration-related issues. It covers how Congress, the courts, international institutions, and administrative agencies interact to address immigration issues, with emphasis on refugee and anti-terrorism policy. Because U.S. immigration law is particularly dependent on code and regulation, students should be prepared to engage in complex analysis of detailed statutory and regulatory provisions. Finally, the course introduces the international regime governing interstate cooperation on immigration issues, including how that framework interacts with U.S. law. Several of the sessions will feature guest lecturers, including lawyers and policy-makers working on issues such as the recent refugee crisis and Trump-era developments in U.S. immigration policy.
