Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the laws that regulate our food system. After a brief history of food regulation and an overview of the foundational statutes and relevant agencies, we will consider the federal laws relating to food safety and food labeling; civil and criminal enforcement; inspections of regulated entities; food recalls and crisis response; state and local food regulation; biotechnology (“GMOs”); domestic food assistance; and foreign food aid. We will consider the values, often competing, which animate American food policy, and what our successes and failures in this area of the law mean for public health, the public good, and our perspectives regarding the role of governmental regulation.
