Course Description

This is a general survey course in public international law. It is designed to introduce students to the fundamental principles, institutions and actors of the international legal system and to provide the foundation for studying specialized areas of international law. Among other topics, it will cover the traditional sources of international law (treaties and custom), the subjects of international law (states, international organizations, and individuals), the role of international law in the U.S. legal system, the law of jurisdiction and immunities, and dispute settlement mechanisms. It will also introduce selected substantive areas of international law, including the law of sea and the law governing the use of force. It will incorporate discussion of current events and of the interaction of international law and politics.
