Course Description

This course offers an in-depth look at the increasingly complex world of money in politics, including the web of federal, state, and local laws that govern efforts to influence elections. The Seminar will review past efforts to regulate political money, recent developments in the legal tactics and vehicles used to conduct campaigns, the emerging intersection of domestic political speech and foreign influence operations, and previous U.S. Supreme Court cases like McCutcheon and Citizens United. Class sessions will also focus on the topics of disclosure, tax rules for non-profit political groups, "pay-to-play" laws, enforcement procedures, federalism, and the Internet.
