Course Description

From the founding of our nation, law and policy’s treatment of race have shaped society beginning with slavery through modern times. This course examines the influence of race on U.S. society with a strong emphasis on its influence on educational opportunities and outcomes. The course studies and critiques the legal and policy architecture of the Thirteenth and Fourteenth Amendments though the laws of the Civil Rights Movement. It then analyzes how law and policy’s treatment of race have shaped desegregation and integration, school funding, affirmative action, and school discipline, to name a few of the topics. The class also explores the intersection of race and poverty in education and how this intersection influences educational opportunities and achievement.
