Technological innovation has become increasingly important throughout the national and world economies, and so too has patent law. Most national law firms now include patent litigation practices, and top-level appellate litigation departments almost invariably cover appeals in patent cases as central part of their work. The increased prominence of patent law has also led to increased controversy, with pitched battles in recent Supreme Court cases reshaping fundamental doctrines of the field. This course will provide an introduction to this vibrant field, with a course of study covering the rules for obtaining and enforcing patents. Neither a scientific nor a technical background is necessary for this course (and, indeed, many highly successful patent litigators also do not have scientific or technical degrees).
