Course Description

Education law and policy determine the goals, foundation and structure of public education today. This course explores historical and contemporary legal and policy debates regarding education, with an emphasis on issues of educational opportunity and inequality, such as race and sex discrimination, the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and its reauthorizations, as well as school choice. The course also examines the rights of students and teachers. Students will analyze both past and current law and policy and how law and policy should be reformed to achieve the goals of the education system. Our focus will be on education within the K-12 system.
