Community Engagement and Equity Office

Assistant Dean Mark C. Jefferson leads the Community Engagement and Equity Office at UVA Law. Jefferson works to strengthen and advance the school’s commitment to being a diverse and equitable institution in which every member — including students, faculty and staff — feels an equal sense of belonging. He leads the school’s Committee on Diversity, Equity and Belonging, and collaborates with the admissions, graduate studies and financial aid offices on student recruitment and success. Jefferson is a resource for faculty and staff to enrich efforts in hiring and retention, the curriculum, classrooms, clinics, experiential courses and programs, among other aims.

Diversity, Equity and Belonging Committee

The central role of UVA Law’s Diversity, Equity, and Belonging Committee is to provide all students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to succeed, to sustain a diverse community and to cultivate a sense of belonging for all members of our community. In order to achieve these goals and create culturally competent citizens and lawyers, the committee will work to remove barriers to participation, provide academic and professional support, and encourage the inclusion of relevant course offerings. This committee will also collaborate with the SBA Diversity Committee to hear student concerns and convey them to the administration. Lastly, the committee will assess the community's needs for dedicated staffing and other support and openly celebrate our commitment to diversity and community. Contact the committee at @email.

Just Report It and Report a Barrier

Just Report It is the University’s online system for reporting:

  • Sexual and gender-based harassment and violence
  • Bias and discrimination/harassment
  • Hazing
  • Clery Act Compliance (by CSAs)
  • Interference with speech rights
  • Youth protection
  • Preventing and addressing threats or acts of violence

Report a Barrier allows community members to report issues with equal access to preserve the civil rights of people with disabilities. Barriers to this access may include things such as an inaccessible website, an inoperative elevator, a blocked access ramp, video without captions, or other lack of access to an event or program.
