1960s Class Notes

1960

T. Maxfield Bahner was honored by the Kiwanis Club of Chattanooga, Tenn., with the 2014 Distinguished Service Award for outstanding community leadership. He is a senior member of the litigation section of Chambliss, Bahner & Stophel, where he concentrates his practice on complex litigation.

Richard N. Greatwood is teaching a seminar in elder law for the fifth year at Barry University Law School in Orlando, Fla., as adjunct professor. He wrote that he was looking forward to the Jefferson Uncorked event on the subject of education in an online setting hosted by the UVA Club of Orlando.

Philip V. Moyles recently established an award in honor of his mother and father at Mount St. Mary’s University, his alma mater. The award is given to a third year student in the pre-law studies curriculum. “Hopefully, a recipient will apply to the Law School,” he writes.

1962

Frank C. Galloway Jr. was recognized by the Alabama State Bar Association and the Birmingham Bar Association in 2012 for having practiced law for 50 years. He’s now in his 52nd year of practice. He has been listed in Best Lawyers and Super Lawyers since the beginning of those publications. He is a member with Hand Arendall, in Birmingham, where he is chairman of the municipal law practice group.

Colonel Robert D. Hoagland writes that he is engaged to be married. He notes that he is only 77 years old and the date is not set yet.

1963

William R. Rakes has been named Best Lawyers’ Roanoke Lawyer of the Year William R. Rakes '632014 for appellate practice and bet-the-company litigation and is listed in Super Lawyers Business Edition for business litigation. He is senior partner with Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore, where he chairs the banking and finance group. He focuses on advising banks and other financial entities on governance, regulatory, and securities matters and handles commercial litigation for a variety of businesses.

1965

Tom Murray is a trial attorney who for the past 15 years has focused his work on representing clients in sudden acceleration cases brought against automobile manufacturers in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Tom is a frequent commentator in the media on sudden acceleration. His recent book, Deadly by Design: The Shocking Cover-up Behind Runaway Cars, details the story of the legal battle fought against the auto industry and the cover-up of faulty electronic systems that have caused the injury and death of thousands of people. 1967

J. Rudy Austin has been named to the Super Lawyers Business Edition forJ. Rudy Austin '67 civil litigation defense. He was also recognized in Virginia Business as among Virginia’s legal elite in 2013 in construction law. He is a senior litigation partner with Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore in Roanoke, where he focuses his practice on insurance defense, insurance coverage, workers’ compensation, construction, and legal ethics.

Gene D. Dahmen was selected for inclusion in the 2013 New England Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers 2014 in family law. She is senior counsel with Verrill Dana in Boston, Mass.

1968

Harold W. Mullis '68Harold W. Mullis was honored with the H.L. Culbreath Jr. Profile in Leadership Award for 2013 by the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce at the annual chamber meeting. He is vice chair of the University of South Florida’s board of trustees and is a shareholder and founding member currently serving as president with Trenam Kemker. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in corporate law and mergers & acquisitions law.

1969

Garland Allen practices state and local tax law part-time in Santa Monica, Calif., where he and Farrokh have lived since moving from Chicago in 2002. He promotes state efforts to adopt the ABA Model State Administrative Tax Tribunal Act (in Georgia and Illinois so far). He is treasurer and board member of Death Penalty Focus, which works to abolish the death penalty in California. In 2012 it was a close vote, losing 52 to 48 percent. “We do lots of fun stuff, too,” he writes. “We’re grateful for the life we are living and look forward to our 45th reunion in May.”

Reid H. Ervin was recognized by Virginia Business as among Virginia’s legal elite in the field of labor and employment law for 2013. He is principal of Reid H. Ervin & Associates in Norfolk.

William H. Hobson moved his trusts and estates practice to Summers Compton Wells in Clayton, Mo., in May 2013.

Gordon D. Schreck was appointed distinguished visiting professor of admiralty and maritime law at Charleston School of Law for the 2013-14 academic year. He continues to practice as senior partner in the Charleston office of Womble, Carlyle, Sandridge & Rice.
