New Alvarez-Coughlin Award Recognizes LGBT Supporters at UVA Law and Beyond
A University of Virginia School of Law student group recently presented a new award recognizing support of the LGBT community to Professor Anne Coughlin and Luis Alvarez Jr. '88, president and CEO of the UVA Law School Foundation.
Lambda Law Alliance's Alvarez-Coughlin Award, named after its first honorees by the students, will be given to those who have displayed "extraordinary efforts" on behalf of the LGBT community by "creating an open, supportive and welcoming environment for diversity" at the Law School, the University as a whole and beyond.
Lambda Law Alliance, a support network for members of sexual minorities and their allies, created the award to honor recipients' past actions and service, as well as to act as a call to continue such support.
"Each recipient's example has been essential to UVA Law's continued reputation for possessing a tightly woven community that invites and values many voices — and that example will be even more vital in the future as we seek always to be stronger and better," said second-year law student Hillary Taylor, chair of the Lambda Law Alliance.
The awards, which will be given to one or more recipients each year, were presented at the annual Lambda Law Alliance dinner on Oct. 9 in Charlottesville. Alumni supporters of the Law School's LGBT community returned for the event, at which employers recruit students as well.
J. Goodwin Bland '87, law firm Bingham McCutchen's hiring partner in New York and a member of the firm's Diversity Executive Committee, attended the dinner.
"These dinners are great networking opportunities, and I was fortunate to hire two great LGBT students whom I met at these events," Bland said. "I'd also like to thank the Foundation and faculty for their unwavering support of these events and of UVA Law LGBT students and alumni, who will play an important role in the next generation of the legal industry."
