The University of Virginia School of Law recently completed its 2013-14 annual giving campaign and, thanks in part to the generosity of a record 9,172 alumni donors, raised $17.3 million in total gift revenue.

This year's 54.4 percent participation rate among alumni — also a historic high — marked the ninth consecutive year that participation surpassed 50 percent.

The Law School Foundation spearheads the annual fundraising, which concluded on June 30. UVA Law depends on tuition, endowment and private gifts for its operations.

"Annual giving participation is a deeply meaningful measure of our graduates' affection for the Law School," Dean Paul G. Mahoney said. "Because we rely on tuition revenue and private giving, our annual giving campaigns are essential to maintaining our reputation for delivering the most powerful student experience in legal education."

Of the $17.3 million raised, $4.9 million was unrestricted. Unrestricted gifts support some of the Law School's most pressing needs.

"While 'unrestricted' may imply a wide range of discretion, in fact these funds are in large part committed to critical areas such as financial aid, loan forgiveness, student organizations, clinics and faculty research," Mahoney said. "Unrestricted funds provide the school with important latitude to undertake new initiatives and meet unanticipated needs throughout the year."

The Law School Foundation was created in 1952 and is a nonprofit corporation whose mission is to receive, administer and manage the private gifts of Law School graduates and friends. For information about giving, visit the foundation's contact page.
