Staff and faculty at the University of Virginia School of Law have been preparing for students’ return to Grounds this fall.

These photos capture how the school is evolving to teach classes both in person and online.

  • A classroom podium with plexiglass

Classroom spaces are being outfitted with web cameras, multiple monitors and plexiglass to assist instructors and promote a safe environment.

  • A sticker at a desk

Seating is marked with stickers to show students where to sit — and not to sit — to maintain social distance.

  • Leslie Kendrick gives a demonstration

Faculty are getting ready as well. Vice Dean Leslie Kendrick ’06 demonstrates the new classroom setup during a faculty enrichment seminar.

  • Caplin Pavilion

Spaces typically used for events are being converted to classrooms. Caplin Pavilion has a new carpet to help sound quality for online learners, and will soon be populated with socially distanced desks.

  • Purcell Reading Room with hand sanitizer stations

Purcell Reading Room temporarily served as a storage space for 120 hand sanitizer stands.

  • Wipe dispenser stations outside classrooms

Days later, they are installed around the school, along with 50 wipe dispenser stations.

  • A sign encouraging social distancing

Walking through the building shows signs of the times.

  • A "thanks for practicing social distancing" sticker
  • A social distancing sign in the Law Library
  • Plexiglass installed at Law Library desks

The Law Library has installed plexiglass to allow two students to study per desk.

  • Door signs encouraging mask use

To promote a safe and healthy community, the University is requiring people inside the building and other UVA facilities to wear face coverings when around others.

Founded in 1819, the University of Virginia School of Law is the second-oldest continuously operating law school in the nation. Consistently ranked among the top law schools, Virginia is a world-renowned training ground for distinguished lawyers and public servants, instilling in them a commitment to leadership, integrity and community service.
