As the authors of the American Association of School Librarians’ (AASL) new school library standards have noted, school library standards during the first half of the twentieth century centred on school librarians knowing the library collection at their school. As time has progressed, school library standards increasingly focussed on school librarians functioning in the roles of teachers, instructional leaders and leaders in professional development. In addition to knowing the library’s collection well, school librarians now must focus on issues of digital citizenship, copyright and information literacy.
