Course Description

This course will explore the historical, philosophical, and constitutional foundations of the relation between religion and the state. Its primary focus will be on the religion clauses of the First Amendment. In considering the modern case law, and various theories of how the state should treat religion, the course will cover numerous topics under the broad headings of religious accommodation, public funding of religion, the influence of religion and government on public culture, and the role of religious convictions in political and legal decision-making.

 Flex examination at end of the semester, with a paper option that would be due on or before 4:30 pm (EST) on the last day of the exam period. Students seeking to satisfy the upper-level writing requirement must submit a timely Writing Requirement Intent Form to the Student Records Office  - retroactive exceptions will not be granted.
