Course Description

Advanced Environmental Law is a skills course that will engage students on complex problems across the range of practice functions performed by environmental law practitioners in private practice, public interest and governmental settings.  These functions include counselling; enforcement defense, citizen suits, and other litigation; and rulemaking and policy development.  The course will explore these functions through case materials and class exercises, including simulated client counselling and negotiations.  Case materials will expose students to a wide selection of federal environmental statutes and their state counterparts, including air pollution permitting regimes covering greenhouse gas emissions as well as conventional pollutants, wetlands jurisdictional determinations and enforcement, liability schemes for contaminated sites and natural resource damages, and chemical risk assessment and risk management.
