Course Description

The first half of the course offers a comprehensive survey of the constitutional and legal structure of the European Union. After a brief historical introduction, the course will explore such fundamental structural features as sources and forms of European Union acts, the role of the Court of Justice and of fundamental rights. The course will also shed some light on todays’ challenges connected with the Brexit. The second half of the course will focus on the Basic Freedoms on the functioning of the European Union and secondary community law, including free movement of workers, capital, goods and services. The course focuses on the business law aspects – mergers, cartels etc. – as well as social and equal rights aspects and gives an in-depth view into a legal system structuring a Single Market of 28 countries and 508 million people. Recent developments on the Currency Union and the Euro will also be covered.

Description: A take-home examination will be distributed in a sealed envelope on the last day of the class, and students will be on their honor to write and complete their exam answers in a stated amount of time upon opening the envelope and to submit the exam answers via EXPO shortly thereafter but no later than noon two weeks after the last class session.
