Course Description

This course is the first semester of a year-long course designed to introduce students to a variety of new work in legal history. Students are required to attend the legal history workshop and the legal history writing group and to write a number of short reaction papers in response to the work presented by legal historians over the course of the year. There is no final exam. Through the class, students will engage with legal history scholars on the UVA faculty and at other institutions and will learn how to critique a piece of scholarship.

Written Work Product: Students will be required to submit several short reaction papers directly to the instructors (not via EXPO) drafted in response to the work presented by legal historians over the course of the year.

Course Notes: The Law School will initially reserve 8 seats for Law students, and the remaining seats will be available through the History Dept students enrolled in HIST 9275. For this year-long course, students will receive 1 credit in the Fall (on a letter-graded basis) and 2 credits in the Spring (on a letter-graded basis).
