Course Description

This is the first semester of a yearlong seminar designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. Through a focus upon depictions of southern lawyers in fiction, film and historical writing this seminar explores the concept of the “Southern lawyer,” its association with a particular view of legal ethics, and its function a model of professionalism not always consonant with that embraced by other branches of the American bar. Class meetings will be held on selected Wednesday evenings throughout the academic year. Attendance is mandatory and grading with be on a pass/fail basis. Assigned Texts: Readings marked with a * will be available in the course packet. All films will be on reserve in the Law School Library. Other texts will be available in the Law School Bookstore.
