Seminar in Ethical Values (YR)

Section 9, Fall 17

Schedule Information

Enrollment: 6/6
Credits: 0

Course Description

FIRST PERSON. Lawyers and physicians alike receive and respond to stories from persons very different from themselves, and clients and patients frequently present themselves at times of personal vulnerability or crisis, as when injury or illness disrupts a life. This seminar inquires into the challenges of first-person narrative and, by implication, the place and ethics of personal storytelling in professional practice. With readings from William Shakespeare, Tom Stoppard, Virginia Woolf, and Jorge Luis Borges, among others, we will examine self-presentation at critical life-moments. Considerations will include storytelling and identity, multiple subjective perspectives, narrative reliability/unreliability, and authors' accomplishments in crafting first-person monologues and characters’ distinctive voices and in evoking reader response.
