Course Description

The required skills course for LL.M. candidates unfamiliar with the U.S. common law system, Graduate Legal Research & Writing offers guidance for class preparation, research, and writing - intellectual skills necessary for regular class work, meeting the upper-level writing requirement, and future professional endeavors. The course covers fundamentals of U.S. legal research materials and methods, and focuses on various forms of descriptive legal writing. This yearlong offering is graded and carries two academic credits, one credit per semester. The fall semester explores sources of U.S. law through research exercises and short writing assignments, including Bluebook citation. The spring semester addresses descriptive (predictive) legal reasoning and writing, with a brief introduction to prescriptive (academic) legal writing.
