Course Description

This course will explore various legal/policy issues arising in the context of genetics and genomics. No prior scientific knowledge is required!. We will review the history of genetics in the United States, with attention to the incorporation of "eugenic" concepts into the law. Other sessions will survey the following topics: genetic privacy, including questions of family's rights to genetic information, genetic anti-discrimination law related to employment and insurance; reproductive issues, and non-medical sex selection; the implications of novel genetic technologies in medical treatment (e.g., cloning, embryonic stem cells), public health (e.g., premarital or newborn screening, DNA biobanks, population screening); malpractice and genetics and gene-editing.

Written Work Product: Students will be required to write a paper that will be due via EXPO upload no later than two weeks after last class session at noon (EST).
