Valley Road Vineyards owned by Barbara and Stan '81 Joynes

About Valley Road Vineyards

Founded in 2015, Valley Road Vineyards was conceived by a group of friends who brough talents from successful careers in law, advertising, insurance, real estate development, and writing, among others. With their mutual love of Virginia wine, a vineyard operation in the heart of the Monticello Viticulture Area seemed a good choice for a fun and rewarding business venture. Led by co-founder and CEO Stan Joynes, the group found an ideal site for a new vineyard and tasting room on Rte 151 at the head of the Rockfish Valley in Afton, Virginia. The first wines were planted in the spring of 2016, and VRV bottled its first wines in April.

Prospice Wines owned by Jay Krutulis '00

About Prospice Wines

Prospice is the creation of two friends with a shared vision for wines and winemaking.  Each changed course from a prior professional career, drawn to winemaking by the impulse to craft an artisanal product.

At Prospice our focus is on making balanced and elegant wines that celebrate the source fruit and the vineyard sites.  We seek to roll back the clock on the modern trend toward riper, more extracted wines, preferring a lighter touch of oak and balanced extraction and alcohol.  We embrace modern scientific research into fermentation and aging, and the use of chemical analyses to understand and guide the production of the best wines we can possibly make from that fruit, but minimize the use of overly manipulative additives or techniques.  We use predominantly neutral oak barrels for aging, but employ a small number of new oak barrels — always of a carefully selected style and cooperage to complement the wine to be aged.

Throughout the process, the science, the analyses, the techniques, and the barrels are all ultimately in the service of the most subjective but most important tool we have:  our palate.  Ultimately, a wine is a small work of art in a bottle, and we seek to make each Prospice wine unique, expressive, and beautiful.

Featured Wines

2020 Lonesome Spring Ranch Vineyard Rosé
Prospice's third iteration of Rosé is delightful and lively rosé of Grenache, Counoise, and Cinsault.  This wine will transport you directly to Provence, with vibrant acidity and delicate floral and red fruit notes.  (Retail $22)

2017 Les Collines Vineyard Syrah
Sourced from one of Washington's most celebrated vineyards, this wine brings all the beauty and intricacy that Syrah has to offer.  Red brambly fruit interlaces with a savory herbal quality that is a hallmark of this vineyard site.  50% whole cluster fermentation brings structure and balance.  Aged 17 months in all neutral French oak, this wine is entirely about the fruit and the vineyard.  Now with a little extra time in bottle, this wine is showing beautifully.  92 Points, Editors' Choice, Wine Enthusiast.  (Retail $45)

2017 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
This wine turns back the clock a bit on the modern American trend toward bigger, more opulent Cabernets.  Sourced from 6 different vineyard sites, and with a final composition of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc, this balanced and elegant wine is delicious now but will also reward patient aging.  After 22 months in 29% new French oak, this wine shows all the classical beauty and nuance that Cabernet has to offer.  93 Points, Cellar Selection, Wine Enthusiast.  (Retail $50)
