2000s Class Notes

2000

The U.S. Supreme Court granted certiorari on two prison civil rights petitions that Jean-Claude Andre filed pro bono. Andre will be briefing the cases over the summer and arguing the cases in the fall. He will also be mooting the cases in October at Georgetown, at Public Citizen, and at the ACLU.

Travis Blais and his wife Haven have moved back to their home state of New Hampshire. Blais has moved to Mintz Levin as an associate in the Boston office, where he continues to practice tax law. Earlier this year, the couple was blessed with their first child, a son named Xavier. Appropriately enough, he was born on April 15.

Rohit Kumar was promoted to Director of Policy for Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist. Kumar has been with the Leader for just over three years and in this new role will be overseeing Frist’s policy items as he finishes up his term and looks ahead to the future.

Nate Pietila recently relocated to the Seattle area where he has joined Aero Law Group in Bellevue, Wash. Pietila represents corporations and individuals in connection with the purchase, sale, lease, exchange, and operation of commercial and business aircraft.

Amy and Marc Strauss celebrated the birth of their son, Ethan Henry, on September 10, in New York City.

Brian J. Wise has been named Vice President of Business Development for Country Health Care of Nebraska in Omaha where he and his wife relocated from Bethesda, Md.

2001
Reunion Year

After taking a month off to work on her dad’s cattle ranch in Montana in April 2005, Taryn Kiekow switched from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft to McKenna Long & Aldridge. She remains in Washington, DC.

Alisa M. Ivers Leventis and her husband James welcomed their first child, Margaret Taylor Leventis, to the world on October 26. The family now resides in Columbia, S.C.

William Charles Parise and his wife Brette announce the birth of their first child, Louisa Brette on December 8. Parise is currently manager and counsel of First American Title of the Carolinas in Charlotte, N.C.

Evan Wamsley and Rena Ozyildirim were married at the University Chapel on July 23. A reception followed at the Farmington Country Club. The couple resides in Arlington, Va., where Evan practices corporate tax law at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher in Washington, DC. His wife is a senior with Ernst & Young’s technology & security risk services group.


2002


David A. Bragdon
has accepted an offer to clerk with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas for 2006–2007. Bragdon, currently an associate in the commercial litigation group of Burr & Forman in Birmingham, Ala., clerked for Judge Stephen Williams of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit soon after graduating from Law School. Ellen F. Burns left Sidley Austin in Los Angeles to return to the Washington, DC area after accepting a position as a trademark attorney with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office.

Paul DeLaney received a political appointment as the Staff Secretary to the U. S. Trade Representative at the Office of the U. S. Trade Representative.

Melissa Howard recently relocated to Chicago. She is a litigation associate at McDermott Will & Emery.

Jen Pope and her husband Brian are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter Katie, born in the spring of 2005. The family lives in Waukesha, Wis.

Kimberly Robertson and her husband Peter (UVA Medicine ’03) welcomed daughter Anna Rose on March 9, 2005.

James Van Doren accepted a position with the Healthcare Mergers & Acquisitions group at Lehman Brothers, Inc. in New York.

After three years of experience in complex business and commercial litigation, Jeremy Webb has joined Gable & Gotwals in Oklahoma City.


2003


On May 14, 2005, Karin Ottens married Joshua Pranley, CFA and consultant for First Annapolis Consulting in Baltimore. The couple now resides in Bethesda, Md. Lori Hildebrand served as bridesmaid.

2004


U.S. Navy Lt. Christopher Colby was married to Margaret Samra (CLAS ’05) on June 26 at the University Chapel. In true Virginia form, Chris and Maggie enjoyed the company of many dear friends from the University and Law School community at Alumni Hall, complete with the Virginia Reel and toasting from Jefferson cups. Chris is stationed at the Washington Navy Yard, Washington, DC, and volunteered for deployment aboard USNS COMFORT (T-AH20) last year in support of Hurricane KATRINA relief, while Maggie is a Master’s candidate in Public Health Policy at the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.

Ross Fisher joined forces with Law School Professor John Norton Moore, and Professor Robert Turner ’81 to edit a book of essays on the Vietnam War, To Oppose Any Foe: The Legacy of U.S. Intervention in Vietnam. The essays were written by current or former UVA Law students. (See In Print section.)

Johnathan M. Fox joined Baker & Hostetler in the firm’s Cleveland office.

Benjamin P. Fryer was married on March 4 in Atlanta to Wendy Peek of Berlin, Ga. In attendance were Adam Nadborny, Jennifer (Linker) Nadborny, Fraser Reid, Dan Murphy, Grace Robinson, Rina Kushner, John David Thomas and Elizabeth (Crocker) Thomas.

Corban Klug joined Charlottesville’s Scott Kroner as an associate in August. Prior to that, Klug clerked for the Honorable B. Waugh Crigler in Charlottesville.

Maggie S. Krantz has joined McCandlish Holton in Richmond. Her practice is focused on representing health care clients in regulatory, transactional, and corporate matters. She also regularly works on general corporate issues for her clients, including contractual, intellectual property, and antitrust matters. Krantz lives with her husband of seven years in Glen Allen, Va.

Mary Chris Moore and Justin Thomas Dobbie were married in Arlington, Va. on October 1.

Justin A. PageJustin A. Page joined the labor and employment practice area at Bass, Berry & Sims in downtown Nashville, Tenn.

Anne Ralph joined the law firm of Bricker & Eckler in Columbus, Ohio as an associate. Ralph is a member of the firm’s new attorney working group. She previously served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kenneth F. Ripple ’68 of the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Kosta Stojilkovic, who was clerking for Judge John Roberts on the DC Circuit, is now clerking with him on the Supreme Court, along with Michael Passaportis who was originally to clerk for the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist.

Having accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps last fall, Breier Scheetz was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He is stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station in Oak Harbor, Wash. A consummate bibliophile, he writes he has long exhausted his bookshelves.

Jonathan Woodruff and Melissa J. Rose were married on September 10 at BarboursvilleVineyards in Barboursville, Va. Kate H. Bally and Nessa Horewitch Jeffrey P. Yarbroread during theceremony.

Jeffrey P. Yarbro joined Bass, Berry & Sims in the firm’s litigation practice area in Nashville, Tenn.

2005


Jason Binder
accepted a position as Attorney Advisor to the Honorable Diane L. Kroupa, United States Tax Court. His two year clerkship will begin in June. He is also replacing Professor Kevin Outterson of West Virginia University College of Law as a co-author of a book entitled Representing the Audited Taxpayer Before the IRS.

Brett A. BushBrett A. Bush has joined the Virginia Beach office of Williams Mullen, as an associate in the firm’s health care section where his practice focuses on general health care matters.

Choate, Hall & Stewart in Boston announced Elizabeth Castellani as a new associate in the firm’s litigation department.

Brooke EverleyBradley Arant Rose & White announced Brooke Everley as a new associate in the firm’s Birmingham, Ala. office. Everley is a member of the corporate and securities practice group.

After spending almost two months living out of a backpack while traveling around Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore, Adam Greene was admitted to the North Carolina bar on September 29, and subsequently began work with Moore & Van Allen in Charlotte as an associate in their financial services department.

Scott P. HortonScott P. Horton joined Jaeckle Fleischmann & Mugel in Buffalo, N.Y. Horton is admitted to practice law in the state of New York and concentrates his practice in Labor and Employment law. He is also an active member of the Organization of Public Employment Negotiators.

Kristin Layne Johnson is clerking for U. S. District Judge Ewing Werlein in Houston.

Paul S. RutterPaul S. Rutter joined Bricker & Eckler in Columbus after passing the Ohio bar. Rutter went to the firm following an internship with the Honorable B. Waugh Crigler of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
