2000s Class Notes

2000

Amy Boyea and her husband, Brent, welcomed their third child, Emma Elizabeth, on August 9. Emma joined older brothers David (5) and Ryan (2). The family resides in Arlington, Tex.

Carlos Cruz-Abrams and his wife, Hilary, are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Owen Finn Cruz-Abrams, on November 6. Weighing in at 8 pounds 7.5 ounces, Owen joins his older siblings, Robin (6) and Mason (4). They reside in New York City, where Carlos is an associate with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.

Andrew R. Gladin has been elected partner at Sullivan & Cromwell in the New York office. His practice focuses on securities, mergers and acquisitions, and other corporate matters for domestic and international clients in the banking and financial services industry.

Keri Holleb Hotaling has been made partner in Jenner & Block’s Chicago office. She is a member of the firm’s environmental, energy and natural resources practice, where she focuses on litigation and regulatory matters. She is also a member of the litigation department and its climate and clean technology law and insurance litigation and counseling practices. She represents parties in Superfund and CERCLA matters nationwide.

Anna R. Palmer was recently made partner in the Atlanta, Ga., office of Seyfarth Shaw. She is in the litigation department and the construction practice group, and her practice includes construction law, commercial and general business litigation, complex litigation, and class actions.

ReddyKenya J. Reddy has been elected shareholder with Carlton Fields in the Tampa, Fla., office. Her practice focuses primarily on major commercial litigation, with an emphasis in antitrust law and class action defense.

Melissa Sawyer has been elected partner with Sullivan & Cromwell in the New York office. Her practice focuses on corporate mergers and acquisitions and private equity matters in the U.S. and abroad.

ShusterGeorge W. Shuster, Jr., made partner in the bankruptcy and financial restructuring practice group of WilmerHale in the Boston, Mass., office. He focuses on areas of bankruptcy, out-of-court restructurings, and debt financing transactions.

Samuel Waxman has been elected partner at Shearman & Sterling in the New York office, where he practices in the firm’s intellectual property transactions group.

Jason A. Wheeler has been elected to partnership in the St. Louis, Mo., office of Thompson Coburn, where he is a member of the firm’s tobacco litigation, product liability, and appellate groups. His practice focuses on defending tobacco, pharmaceutical, and consumer product companies in complex personal injury lawsuits in state and federal courts. He is co-chair of the trial advocacy program of the Young Lawyers’ Division of the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis.

Brian Wise and his wife welcomed their daughter, Constance, on November 12.

2001

Michael Fitzpatrick married Helen Kim of Alexandria, Va., on June 7. Taryn Kiekow, Michael Hendershot, Donald LeGower, Igor Purlantov, Charles Reed, and Thomas Rust were in attendance. The couple lives in Chicago.

Gunes F. Hopson was recently appointed to serve on the Board of Governors of the Virginia State Bar’s corporate counsel section. She is director, assistant general counsel in the legal department of Capital One in Richmond.

WearschThomas M. Wearsch has been elected partner with Baker Hostetler in the Cleveland, Ohio, office. His practice concentrates on bankruptcy, restructuring, and creditors’ rights.

2002

Terra K. Atkinson was named one of the Charlotte Business Leader’s 2008 Women Extraordinaire. She is a partner with Katten Muchin Rosenman in the Charlotte, N.C., office, where she concentrates her practice in residential mortgage banking matters.

BaldwinJoseph R. Baldwin was recently named counsel in the litigation/controversy department of WilmerHale in the Washington, D.C., office. He is a member of the intellectual property litigation practice group.

 

Berger

Dr. L. Wolfgang Berger LL.M. and opera singer Rasa Marisiute were recently married in Rasa’s home town of Vilnius, Lithuania. Michael Warner Kallus ’03 was pleased to attend the festivities and wish the couple (especially Rasa) good luck.

Jeffrey C. Bollerman has left Citigroup to join www.secondmarket.com. SecondMarket is the world’s largest centralized marketplace for illiquid assets, such as limited partnership interests, auction-rate securities, bankruptcy claims, and restricted securities in public companies. Bollerman will run the limited partnership interest marketplace. 

Meredith Caskey Parker and her husband, Andrew, welcomed their first child, Olivia Catherine, on October 29. The family resides in Fairfax, Va.

Doolittle

Reid Doolittle, the son of Noah Doolittle and his wife, Jaime, at the Genesee River's High Falls in Rochester, N.Y. The couple is expecting another son in July.

Paul DeLaney joined FedEx Express after three years working at the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office as deputy chief of staff. DeLaney has joined FedEx Express’ new Washington, D.C., Office of Trade and International Affairs to work on trade policies for the company.

Afi Johnson-Parris is pleased to announce the formation of the law office of Afi Johnson-Parris in Greensboro, N.C. The practice will focus on family and divorce law and employment discrimination.

MitchellJames L. “Jay” Mitchell is a shareholder in the Birmingham-based firm of Maynard, Cooper & Gale, where he practices general civil and commercial litigation. He and his wife, Elizabeth Bloodworth Mitchell, now have three children—a daughter, Tully (4), a son, Jack (2), and a daughter, Claire (born in August).

Nicole Murray joined Quarles & Brady’s intellectual property practice as an associate in the Chicago office. Murray focuses her practice on intellectual property litigation as well as trademark and copyright counseling.

Peter and Kimberly Robertson and their daughter Anne Rose welcomed Laura Catherine to the family on February 29, 2008.

Bill and Kathleen Hanlon Sinclair welcomed Edward Joseph (“Teddy”) Sinclair on November 3, just in time for Bill to vote in the Presidential election the next day. “Teddy is growing like kudzu and weighs more than some one-year-olds.” Bill, still at Beveridge & Diamond in Baltimore, is enjoying teaching an international environmental law course at the University of Maryland School of Law and has been invited to teach in the fall. Kathleen is currently taking time off from the law practice to care for Teddy, “a job far more challenging in many ways than my legal practice was.”

Dusty Vogelpohl has joined Bryan Cave as an associate in the Phoenix, Ariz. office. His practice in the firm’s intellectual property group involves counseling in patents, trademarks, Internet issues, copyrights, trade secrets, and business transactions.

2003

Nick Boivin has joined the Boston office of Fish and Richardson. His practice emphasizes patent prosecution.

Tristan Snell is with WilmerHale in Boston, Mass., focusing on intellectual property and appellate litigation. He was part of the WilmerHale team that tried the first habeas corpus hearings in Boumediene v. Bush for detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, winning writs for five of their six clients. Rumor has it that he rounded out 2008 with an appearance on Jeopardy!, finishing a close second.

 

2004 Reunion Year

David A. Chandler LL.M. was invested as Mississippi Supreme Court Justice in Starkville in January. Chandler served for eight years on the Court of Appeals and as chair of the Court of Appeals rules committee and co-chair of the professionalism committee of the Mississippi bar. He serves as adjunct professor at Mississippi College School of Law.

MillerThe Georgia Court of Appeals swore in the Honorable M. Yvette Miller LL.M. as the Court’s new Chief Judge on January 6, at the Georgia State Capitol. Judge Miller is the first African American woman to hold this position. Miller will focus on strengthening relationships between branches of state government and within the appellate court; maintaining the viability of the court in difficult financial times; and establishing electronic filing for the state Court of Appeals. First appointed to the Court of Appeals in 1999 by Governor Roy Barnes, Miller has been re-elected statewide, without opposition, for two six-year terms. Unanimously selected by her peers to serve as Chief Judge for a two-year term, she will be responsible for the administration of one of the busiest appellate courts in the country and will act as the head of the Court for ceremonial purposes and for all communications.

Jake and A-J (Fershleiser) Secrist welcomed their first child, Frida Kathyrn, on December 4. Frida Kathryn was born weighing 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and measured 19 inches. The family lives in Charlotte, N.C.

SuderSean S. Suder has been named a 2009 Ohio “Rising Star” in the area of real estate. He is in the Cincinnati office of Keating Muething & Klekamp.

Christine and Matt Vermeeren welcomed their second child, Elise Rose, on April 26, 2008. Matt, Christine, Sydney, and Elise enjoy living in San Diego while Matt works for Latham & Watkins.

2005

In October, David Avitabile was married to Elizabeth Slade Shaw on Kiawah Island, S.C. Liz is currently employed as in-house counsel to the Oprah Winfrey Foundations. The couple purchased a house in Arlington, Va., and are happily settling into their new home. Rick Bettan was a member of the bridal party, and David Thomas, Matthew Cooper, Mark Horowitz, Caroline Geiger ’06 and David Reed ’06 were also in attendance at the wedding. Dave continues to work as an associate in the real estate section at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman in Washington, D.C., where he practices land use and zoning law. He also recently co-authored a teaching supplement on land use and zoning issues, which was published in October. The teaching supplement serves as a companion to Bordering on Madness: An American Land Use Tale, by Andrew F. Popper, a (not-so) fictional account of the conflict and compromise that arises in development disputes. The supplement expands upon the issues raised in the novel, using cases, scholarship, and case studies.

George Pence joined Sullivan and Cromwell as an associate in their Los Angeles office. He and Tim Nolan occasionally meet up for a round of golf. He recently took a day off to join Dan Bress and his new wife for a day at Disneyland.

2007

Jason S. Beaton has joined the litigation department of Williams Parker Harrison Dietz & Getzen in the Sarasota, Fla., office.

Chris Nasson is an associate at Choate, Hall, and Stewart in Boston, Mass. He practices litigation.

2008

AlbertsonJeffrey Albertson has joined Oppenheimer Wolff & Donnelly in Minneapolis, Minn., where he practices in the corporate finance & transactions group.

John J. Engel is an associate in the business department of Richards, Layton & Finger in Wilmington, Del. Engel is a member of the real estate group, he focuses his practice on commercial site acquisition and development, leasing, land use, and financing.

EsmontJoseph M. Esmont has been named associate in the Cleveland, Ohio, office of Baker Hostetler.

Richard M. Gulbrandsen is an associate with Bryan Cave in the Phoenix, Ariz., office, where he is in the commercial litigation client service group.

Ryan S. Johnson has joined Leonard, Street and Deinard in the firm’s Minneapolis, Minn., office, where he focuses his practice on business and commercial litigation.

StinnettSara E. (Bradshaw) Stinnett is an associate in the transactions section of Jackson Walker in the firm’s Austin, Tex., office.
