1990s Class Notes

1990

David Restaino '90David Restaino has been appointed to the Renewable Energy, Cleantech, and Climate Change Committee by the New Jersey State Bar Association and is chair of the NJSBA’s environmental law section. He was recently elected vice chair of the Air and Waste Management Association Odor Committee, which assesses technical and legal air pollution control issues involved with odors emitted by industrial and other facilities. He is a partner with Fox Rothschild in Princeton, where he focuses his practice on environmental and energy matters, including development, permitting, compliance, recycling, and reporting, as well as health law and real estate matters.

1991

Mark Brzezinski has been appointed as a member of the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board by President Barack Obama. Brzezinski was a Fulbright Scholar in Poland 1991-93 and wrote the book The Struggle for Constitutionalism in Poland. He is a partner with McGuireWoods in Washington, D.C., where he specializes in anti-corruption law.

Alexander Macaulay has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers 2011 in the area of government relations law. He is with Macauley & Burtch in Richmond, Va.

Heaphy ’91, and Zane David Memeger ’91 (left to right), current United States Attorneys and former Law School roommates (’89-’90), shown here while attending the United States Attorneys’ Conference in Washington, D.C., in November. Memeger is U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, Heaphy is U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, and MacBride is U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Their fourth roommate, Michael W. Oyler ’91, was a former law partner of the current U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky.

Steven Okun has been appointed director of public affairs in the Asia Pacific region for Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. He will be responsible for overseeing public affairs, corporate citizenship, and external communications in Asia Pacific, where he will be based, as well as supporting the public affairs and communications efforts of KKR’s portfolio companies in the region. Previously Okun served as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Singapore and, until October, was vice president for public affairs for UPS in Asia Pacific. He has been elected to a two-year term on the council of the Singapore Business Federation and has been named to the industry advisory panel of the SP Jain Center of Management.

Jeff Stredler is serving as president of the Norfolk and Portsmouth Bar Association this year. Jeff is the litigation counsel for Amerigroup Corporation in Virginia Beach, Va.

Greg Willis '91Greg Willis has been elected criminal district attorney of Collin County, Tex. (just north of Dallas). He resigned his judgeship to run for DA. Greg is married to Jill Willis, a state district judge in Collin County. They have two children who gave their parents much practice refereeing disputes.

1992

Amy E. Stewart has been elected to membership in the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation. Fellows are selected for their professional achievements and their commitment to improvement of the justice system throughout Texas. Stewart is shareholder of Amy Stewart Law in Dallas.

1993

In October California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger named Christopher R. Bowen to the bench in the Contra Costa County Superior Court. Bowen has served as a county deputy public defender since 1994.

Last fall, Bill Kincaid was co-chair of the grand reopening of the historic Washington County Courthouse in Arkansas. The building is a stately structure dating from 1905 and has undergone extensive renovations over the past few years.

Jay K. Musoff has joined Loeb & Loeb in New York City as a partner in the white collar criminal defense, corporate compliance, and investigations group. He represents corporations and their senior executives in high-profile investigations, including those relating to insider trading, tax shelters, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act issues, government contractor fraud, and securities and accounting fraud. He was previously with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and prior to that served as a federal prosecutor.

Dana Young '93Dana Young was elected to the Florida House of Representatives on November 2. She and her husband, Matt (Darden ’93), live in Tampa, with their two daughters, Alex and Carson. Dana encourages any alumni to please stop by and visit her legislative offices in Tampa or Tallahassee; the Florida legislature is in session from March through May in Tallahassee.

1994

Brian R. Booker '94Brian R. Booker has been appointed to the board of directors of the Wellness Community, a non-profit organization that provides emotional support and education for cancer patients and their loved ones. Booker is a partner with Quarles & Brady in Phoenix, Ariz., where he focuses his practice on commercial litigation with an emphasis on commercial and professional liability, real estate, securities fraud, and product liability.

Ted Humphrey left the practice of law years ago, but puts his UVA law degree to work as the co-executive producer and writer of the CBS drama series, The Good Wife. He lives in Los Angeles, Calif., with his wife and children.

Richard L. Winston '94Richard L. Winston was recently named among Latin Business Chronicle’s “Top 30 Foreign Lawyers in Latin America.” The Chronicle also includes him in “Who’s Who in Latin American Business.” Winston is a partner with K & L Gates in Miami, where he focuses on complex cross-border transactions that primarily involve Latin America and Europe.

Matthew M. Wolf has joined Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C., where his practice focuses on patent, trade secret, licensing, and business tort issues in the medical and biomedical technology sectors, and the computer hardware and software industries. He was previously with Howrey.

1995

Charles F. Baird LL.M. '95Judge Charles F. Baird LL.M. received the 2010 Civil Libertarian of the Year Award from the Central Texas chapter of the ACLU. Baird led the justice system in his work defending the innocently incarcerated and finding restorative justice solutions. He favors rehabilitative efforts for nonviolent offenders in order to give them a chance to succeed in life, but also to decrease the burden on society and taxpayers. He was the first judge in Texas, and second in the nation, to preside over a posthumous exoneration.

Judge Baird retired from the 299th District Court of Travis County in December. He previously served for eight years on Texas’ highest criminal appellate court. In January he established the criminal law section of the Fowler Law Firm in Austin.

Jeffrey Heninger is serving as attorney-advisor with the commercial and intellectual property law practice group in the office of general counsel for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in Washington, D.C.

Seiichi Shimizu LL.M. writes, “It has been 15 years since I graduated from UVA. I miss the wonderful and exciting days in Charlottesville, and I hope to visit in the near future to see teachers and classmates.”

In a recent case, John H. Zacharia and an Assistant U.S. Attorney successfully sought conviction for a ring of counterfeiters who reproduced thousands of CDs and DVDs to sell through retail stores. A federal grand jury indicted 13 defendants who were allegedly involved, charging them with copyright, trademark, and counterfeit label offenses. The criminal copyright infringement charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison per count. The defendants could be fined up to $250,000 on each count.

Zacharia is with the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section.

Brian M. Zimmet has been promoted to counsel at Hunton & Williams in Richmond, Va. He is a member of the regulated markets team, and his practice spans federal regulation and restructuring of the electric utility industry. He focuses on regulation of regional transmission organizations and independent system operators, investor-owned electric utilities, independent power producers, and power marketers under the Federal Power Act, Public Utility Regulatory Policies Act, and the Electricity Title of the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

1996

Jonathan Gardner '96Hollywood trade magazine Variety named Jonathan Gardner one of its “Dealmakers of 2010.” Gardner told Variety he “always strives for fairness in negotiations,” adding, “[t]he truth is always the strongest argument. Professionals recognize it immediately.” His firm, Cohen Gardner, was in the news often during 2010, most notably in its representation of the sea captains from Deadliest Catch during their dispute with Discovery Communications, a negotiation that pitted the small Beverly Hills boutique against Washington, D.C., firms Williams & Connolly and Arent Fox. Gardner also negotiated seven-figure deals for the sale to Lions Gate of the film Buried at Sundance, and for French director Patrick Jean in the sale of his viral sensation Pixels to Columbia Pictures for Adam Sandler to star. Gardner’s interest in entertainment law was evident when he founded the Virginia Entertainment Law Journal (now the Virginia Sports & Entertainment Law Journal) during law school, after which he joined the business affairs department of PolyGram Films and later served executive terms at Universal and Fox, before co-founding Cohen Gardner in 2002.

Rob Masri '96Rob Masri launched Cardagin Networks in Charlottesville on January 18, with Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris declaring the day “Cardagin Day.” Cardagin is a mobile advertising and loyalty solution that local businesses use to reduce their reliance on traditional local advertising. Headquartered in Charlottesville, Cardagin is now in 12 other markets. Rob and his wife, Natalie, are enjoying life with their other startups, twins Felix and Xavier (11 months), and Mira (almost 3).

1997

Vanessa Chandler has been appointed director of communications and senior policy advisor by Missouri’s state auditor. She previously served as general counsel for two defense contractors.

Laura Deddish Burton '97Laura Deddish Burton has been elected partner in the Greensboro, N.C., office of Smith Moore Leatherwood, where her practice focuses predominantly on immigration and international law. She has been named one of the top professional women in the Triad Area based on her professional success and involvement in her community, and was honored at the 2010 Business Leader’s Women Extraordinaire Awards luncheon in Winston-Salem. She has been selected for inclusion in 2011 Best Lawyers.

The film adaptation of Emily Giffin’s novel, Something Borrowed, starring Kate Hudson, John Krasinski, and Emily (in a cameo role) opens in theaters on May 6. Giffin will attend the world premier at a gala ceremony in Hollywood on May 3.

Jeffrey B. Hubbard recently established Putney & Hubbard in Bedford, Va.

Jason M. Sneed has been named group leader for the trademarks and copyrights group at Alston & Bird in Charlotte. He was named by Business North Carolina as a Legal Elite in intellectual property law for 2010, and was designated a 2010 Rising Star in North Carolina Super Lawyers.

1998

Ann Ayers was recently named Volunteer of the Year by the Women’s Vision Foundation of Denver, Colo., an organization that promotes and supports women as leaders of corporations. Ayers began her volunteer work with Women’s Vision on the management council, overseeing events planning and helping to generate more than $500,000 in revenues. She has served the foundation as board secretary, treasurer, and executive committee member. She is credited with establishing a finance committee and a timely budget for 2011 that allowed for strategic planning. Ayers is senior strategic communications consultant in the Denver office of Mission Minded, a marketing communications firm for non-profits.

Bill Baroni '98Bill Baroni is deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, a job in which he is responsible for the management of five airports, four Hudson River bridges, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, the Port of New York and New Jersey, and the PATH transit system. He is also leading the project to rebuild the World Trade Center site, which includes making sure the 9/11 memorial and museum, 1 World Trade Center (formerly called the “Freedom Tower”), and the transit hub are completed according to schedule.

On September 10, Baroni gave a tour of the World Trade Center site to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano ’83. Building of 1 World Trade Center is rising at one story per week.

Peter Bowden was recently promoted to managing director at Morgan Stanley in Houston. Bowden is an energy investment banker who provides mergers and acquisitions advice to, and leads financings for, energy companies. His client base includes exploration and production companies, as well as providers of midstream and oilfield services. Bowden is also a recognized expert in master limited partnerships, having led more than 50 equity financings for MLPs over the past few years.

Aaron Kanter is in-house counsel for Forté, a sponsor group to USTC Holdings, an investor consortium that acquired Xe Services in December. Xe Services is a leading provider of training and technical services focused on worldwide diplomatic security operations.

Benjamin S. Lippard has been promoted to partner with Vinson & Elkins in Washington, D.C., where he focuses on environmental matters, including civil litigation, civil and criminal enforcement defense, site remediation, and administrative proceedings.

Kelly Luongo Loving has been selected for the Charlotte Business Journal’s annual “40 Under 40” list. She is a member of the corporate department at Robinson Bradshaw & Hinson, where her practice includes a range of commercial transactions with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, and general corporate law.

Paul M. Navarro has been named a 2011 Rising Star by North Carolina Super Lawyers. He is a partner in the labor and employment department in the Charlotte office of McGuireWoods.

James F. Neale has co-authored Food Safety Law, a definitive guide for food producers concerned about liability or plaintiffs stricken by a food-borne illness. (See In Print.) Neale is a partner in the Charlottesville office of McGuireWoods, where he is co-chair of the food-borne illness litigation group. He has been selected for inclusion in Best Lawyers 2011 in the area of product liability litigation.

1999

Antone Melton-Meaux has been named a partner in the Minneapolis, Minn., office of Jackson Lewis, where he concentrates his practice on employment litigation disputes.

Michael Rakower writes that he recently had the pleasure of working on a case with his friend and classmate, Logan Johnson, “a lawyer who is making his mark in Texas.” Logan and the boutique litigation firm he co-founded sought assistance from a New York lawyer on a matter that began in Texas federal court and extended to a federal court in New York. “I was pleased to play a supporting role and work alongside my Law School buddy, who, by calling me, illustrated the camaraderie that is a hallmark of our law school and the envy of our peers.”
