Do by 7/15/19:

  • Enroll in Aetna Student Health Insurance after July 15 and before August 15. If you are not going to use Aetna Student Health Insurance, you need to submit a waiver application by August 30. Health insurance information can be found here. Unless a waiver is granted, you will be billed for Aetna Student Health Insurance, and the payment must be made by October 31.

Do by 8/1/19:

  • Set up your UVA SIS and email accounts. Instructions are found here
  • Submit your Pre-Entrance Health Record by August 1. The form is found here.
  • Respond to the Orientation Survey you received from the Student Affairs Office. You can access the survey here.
  • Pick up your student ID card after August 1. The information you need is here.
  • By August 1, accept your student loans on SIS, sign promissory notes (one for unsub loan and one for Grad PLUS loan), complete on-line student loan entrance counseling and sign up for direct deposit.
  • Update your mailing address and contact information in SIS by August 1.
  • Ensure that the Admissions Office has an official (i.e. directly from the issuing institution or via LSAC) and final (reflecting degree conferral) transcript from any undergraduate or graduate schools you attended. The transcript(s) must be received in the Admissions Office by August 1. If you do not meet this deadline, you will be contacted by the Registrar to provide a written explanation due before orientation explaining the delay, and to describe your plan for meeting this requirement.  Be advised that students who do not provide the Registrar with their official and final transcripts by October 15 will be withdrawn from the JD Program (see Academic Policy I.J.2.b, entitled ‘Administrative Withdrawal,’ here describing this ABA requirement).  

Do by 8/4/19:

  • Contact Hayley Hahn at hah4gn@virginia.edu if you want to participate in the PILA Public Service Day on Sunday, August 18. Please email by 5 p.m. that day so that she can plan.

Do by 8/15/19:

  • Student Health insurance coverage period starts. Coverage ends on August 14, 2020.

Do by 8/16/19:

  • When sections are posted the week of August 12:
    • Go to the bookstore to get your books.
    • Log on to Canvas to get your assignments for the first week.
    • Do all assignments and be prepared for class on August 21
  • If you RSVP'd “yes,” attend the optional orientation day.

  • Attend Orientation. Remember, Orientation is mandatory for August 19 and August 20, and you must sign in on August 19 or risk forfeiting your place.
  • Pick up locker key. You need to reserve a locker online. We will send a reservation link in early August.
  • Read through the Law School Academic Policies so that you are familiar with them.

Do by 8/20/19:

  • Attend Orientation, day 2.

Do by 8/21/19:

  • Attend first day of classes.
  • Pay your Fall term bill by August 21 (it will be available in the Finances section of SIS after July 23).
  • Make sure you have a laptop computer that meets the Law School’s requirements. Computing information is found here.
  • Check the Academic Calendar so that you know when fall break, winter break, reading days and the exam period are. You will have finals on December 9, 12, 16 and 19. Make sure you make your travel plans with reference to the Academic Calendar.

Do by 8/30/19:

  • If you are not going to use Aetna Student Health Insurance, you need to submit a waiver application by August 30. Health insurance information can be found here. Please note that there are no exceptions to this deadline.

Do by 9/2/19:

  • Once you have your student ID, you can get a parking permit at the Parking and Transportation Office on Millmont Street or directly from the office online. If you don’t have your permit by September 2, you risk getting a ticket in the lots around the Law School.

Do by Mid-September:

  • Complete your required online University trainings (links will be sent to you by Dean Allen Groves and the UVA Honor Committee). If you can get these done before you start, you will be way ahead of the game.

Do by 10/31/19:

  • Pay your bill for Aetna Student Health Insurance if that is the health insurance you have.
