Course Description

This course will examine the regulation of financial institutions in the United States, with an emphasis on federal regulation of banking. It will cover the history of the U.S. banking industry; the basic rationales for regulation; the process of forming and acquiring banks; geographic and activities restrictions on banks; safety and soundness safeguards; affiliations between banks and securities, insurance, and other firms; bank failure and resolution; and international banking regulation. The course will also cover a selection of current topics, including regulatory challenges posed by new technologies; financial inclusion; anti-money laundering, sanctions, and anti-bribery compliance; climate-related policies; and white collar crime in the financial industry.
