Course Description

This course will provide an overview of copyright law, the legal regime that governs rights in original and expressive works of authorship (such as books, music, movies, photographs, software, dance, sculptures, paintings, etc’). The major focus will be the Copyright Act and the core issues of copyrightable subject matter; prerequisites for protection; authorship, ownership and transfer of rights; duration; formalities; the bundle of exclusive rights conferred; copyright litigation and what constitutes infringement; fair use and other defenses; and available remedies. We will also discuss the basic philosophical and economic theories motivating copyright law and the way copyright law has adapted to the digital age.
