Course Description

This first 8-9 weeks of the class will examine the questions "What is discrimination?" and "What makes discrimination wrong?" The material will be philosophical in nature, focused on uncovering the philosophical foundation of anti-discrimination law. The last third of the semester will focus specifically on algorithmic discrimination. We will address questions about what makes an algorithm fair or unfair, whether discrimination by algorithm is different in any meaningful way than other discrimination and whether thinking about discrimination in the algorithmic contexts illuminates anything about when and why discrimination is wrong.

Written Work Product

Students will be required to write three short papers (approximate 5 pages each and due directly to instructor not via EXPO) that address an argument or position found in the reading or discussed in class with which they disagree. The papers should explain why they disagree and defend their position. Papers must also consider objections to their view and replies to those objections. These papers are intended to be “think” pieces and as such the emphasis will be on argumentation and will not require outside research. Grades in the course will be based on these assignments and on class participation.
