Course Description

This is a survey course on private and public law in the twentieth century. Topics to be covered include American jurisprudence; the law of mass media; foreign relations law and policy; the internal work of the Supreme Court; the evolving status of constitutional due process, equal protection, and free speech jurisprudence; and the history of the “political question” doctrine from the early twentieth century through Bush v. Gore.

Written Work Product

Students will be expected to write two “response” papers (both due via EXPO, either reacting to positions taken by the instructor in lectures or in book chapters or elaborating upon some topic alluded to in class or in the readings. The papers should be limited to 10 double-spaced pages and should demonstrate evidence of independent research and thought. The first paper will be due immediately after Fall break, and the second the last day the class is scheduled in SIS to meet.
