Course Description

This is the first semester of a yearlong seminar designed to enhance students' understanding of ethical issues and address the broader ethical and moral responsibilities of the lawyer as citizen and leader. This seminar will explore the way lawyers and legal problems are depicted in popular culture and media. We will use films, TV shows, and possibly other media (podcasts, periodical articles, etc.) to explore whether depictions of lawyers, lawyering, judges, and judging are based on a clear understanding of the nature of law practice and the legal system. Are characterizations made in popular media and culture fair or unfair to the participants in the legal system and, if not, does it matter? To enliven the discussion and bonhomie, Amanda Yale, Director of Public Service, will co-host.
