Course Description

The Trial Advocacy College (http://www.trialadcollege.org/) is offered through the offices of Virginia Continuing Legal Education (Virginia CLE) in cooperation with the Law School. More than 100 lawyers from around the country typically attend; 50 additional places in the College are reserved for Virginia law students. The Director of the College, Stephen A. Saltzburg, is a Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School and a former Professor of Law at the University of Virginia. He co-founded the College in 1982. The faculty consists of some of America's best trial lawyers and outstanding judges. The College represents the most advanced advocacy training available through the Law School and has been widely regarded as one of the best programs in the country for more than 30 years. This is an advocacy skills, hands-on course. The course is graded on a credit/no-credit basis. Each student will practice every aspect of advocacy within a small group setting, culminating in a trial before a real jury. Successful completion of the College requires regular attendance, preparation, and effort..

Prerequisites: Evidence, Trial Advocacy, Criminal Defense Clinic, or Prosecution Clinic recommended, but not required. Because the credits in this course count toward the JD Program Professional Skills requirement, JD candidates will be given enrollment priority for this class. Concurrencies: None

Course Notes: Students registration fee for 2024 is $350, which includes written materials; a copy of Prof. Satzburg’s book; continental breakfast Saturday through Thursday, lunch Saturday through Thursday; morning and afternoon snacks, Saturday through Thursday; coffee/tea/water/soft drinks throughout the day; cocktail parties Saturday and Monday. The processes for enrolling in the course will be through the Add/Drop period commencing in mid-November (see LawWeb for details). The only event on Friday, Jan. 5, 2024 is registration for the event. You may also register the morning of Saturday, January 6, 2024 before the program begins as well, but you will want to allow time for the registration process if you choose to register Saturday morning.
