Health Insurance for Law Students

All University of Virginia students are required to maintain health insurance throughout their enrollment.

All students will be billed for health insurance, which is administered by Aetna Student Health in the fall of 2017. The cost for this insurance in the 2016-17 academic year was $2,735. That cost is expected to increase for the 2017-18 academic year. Rate information will be shared here as soon as it is available.

You may opt out of the Aetna Student Health insurance if you have other insurance that meets the University’s coverage requirements. You must complete the waiver application.  The waiver application can be found under the tab “Domestic Students” at You will need your University Identification Number to complete the waiver process, and you can find that number at “University ID Lookup” at the following site: You may also chose to enroll in the Aetna Student Health insurance plan at this site, and you are encouraged to do so before orientation, so that you will have coverage at the earliest possible date. If you have questions about health insurance, please contact Aetna Student Health customer service at 1-800-466-3027.

For questions regarding comparable coverage or the online waiver process, please contact Student Health at or (434) 243-2702.

If you plan to purchase Aetna health insurance through UVA, your University identification number (UID) is also required for the application process.

The plan year for new participants begins in mid-August, 2017. Please be advised, however, that students in the Schools of Law, Medicine, and Business do not qualify for the Graduate Student Health Insurance subsidy that you will see mentioned on the referenced websites.

Incoming students must submit UVA's Pre-Entrance Health Record by Aug. 31. Mail the completed form to:
