1980s Class Notes

1980

Eric Kraeutler was inducted as a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers at the 2013 annual meeting of the College in October. He is a partner in the litigation group with Morgan, Lewis & Bockius in Philadelphia, Pa., where he focuses his practice on complex commercial, white-collar criminal, and intellectual property matters.

William L. Nusbaum writes that 2013 was a fulfilling year in civic commitment. He was elected chair of the real property section of the Virginia State Bar, vice chair of the Hampton Roads Association of Commercial Real Estate’s legislative affairs committee, and vice chair of the Hampton Roads Workforce Development Board (Opportunity, Inc.), and was also appointed to Tidewater Community College’s workforce development committee. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in public finance and real estate law and was named Best Lawyers 2014 Norfolk public finance law lawyer of the year. He is a partner with Williams Mullen.

W. David Paxton was inducted as a fellow of the Virginia Law Foundation in W. David Paxton '80January at the annual Virginia Bar Association meeting in Williamsburg. He was named to the Super Lawyers Business Edition in employment & labor law and was recognized in Virginia Business as being among Virginia’s legal elite in 2013 in the area of labor/employment. He is a partner with Gentry Locke Rakes & Moore in Roanoke, where he focuses his practice on labor and employment law and complex litigation.

1982

James F. Dulcich '82James F. Dulcich was elected president of Waverley Country Club, which was established in 1896. He is a shareholder with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in Portland, Ore., where he focuses his practice on commercial leasing transactions, acquisitions and dispositions of real property, and real estate financing transactions. He was listed in Best Lawyers 2013 in real estate law.

Edmond M. Ianni was on a panel with Jeffrey Rotwitt, president and CEO of Sun Center Studios, and two other CEOs at the Center for Community Leadership Development and Entrepreneurship in Pennsylvania in October to address how entrepreneurs and corporations can partner in emerging industries.

G. Raye Jones recently published One for the Heart: A Collection of Poems. (See In Print.) He is a pastor and an estate and tax-planning attorney with MartinWren in Charlottesville.

U.S. District Judge Richard Mills LL.M. was the guest speaker at the 2013 Veterans Day convocation at Blackburn College in Carlinville, Ill. He is a major general in the Illinois state militia and a retired colonel in the U.S. Army with 33 years of service in the military, including active duty in the Korean War.

Raymond G. Truitt is listed in International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers 2013 in real estate practice and Best Lawyers 2014 in real estate law. He is managing partner of finance and operations and member of the management committee and diversity council with Ballard Spahr in Baltimore, Md. He focuses his practice on commercial real estate financing, leasing, development, and restructuring.

1983

Mark A. Bradley recently published his first book, A Very Principled Boy: The Life of Duncan Lee, Red Spy and Cold Warrior. (See In Print.) Bradley is an attorney in the U.S. Department of Justice National Security Division.

Tony M. Davis has been selected by the 5th Circuit to serve as a bankruptcy judge. After practicing as a partner with Baker Botts in Houston for 19 years, Tony now lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife, Kathryn.

Win Dayton has returned to the United States after three years in Istanbul. He is director of overseas operations in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Conflict and Stabilization Operations. “Alas,” he writes, “it’s Syria all the time, with not nearly enough connection to the class of ’83 folks. I much regret missing the reunion, but I remain in the cult following of Latham’s winners and losers column.”

Chris Knopik '83Chris Knopik has accepted the position of chief trial counsel for the Laser Spine Institute in Tampa, Fla. Knopik previously founded and managed a small firm of trial lawyers in Tampa, most recently known as the Knopik Deskins Law Group. In his new position, Knopik will oversee litigation for the Laser Spine Institute in the various states in which it operates. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in commercial litigation, medical malpractice, and personal injury litigation.

Robert Latham was recently elected chairman of the International Rugby Board regulations committee at the organization’s meeting at its headquarters in Dublin, Ireland. He is a partner with Jackson Walker in Dallas and Houston, Tex., where he chairs the media law and intellectual property litigation practice areas.

Irwin M. Shur '83Irwin M. Shur has been recognized with a lifetime achievement award by the Milwaukee Business Journal. He says he has no idea what caused this other than simply being in practice for a very long time, and doubts that he will ever again grace the cover of a magazine of any kind. Shur is vice president, general counsel, and secretary of Snap-on Incorporated, headquartered in Kenosha, Wisc.

Since graduation, Vic Taylor has practiced with the law firm of Parr Brown Gee & Loveless in Salt Lake City as a real estate transactional lawyer. He and his wife, Caroline, have eleven children—six boys and five girls, and a growing number of grandchildren. Beginning in May, he will be taking a leave of absence from his firm to serve as an area legal counsel for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Philippines.

1984

The Honorable Russell Carparelli LL.M. is the new executive director of the American Judicature Society, whose mission is to secure and promote a qualified and independent judiciary and fair justice system. He formerly served as a judge of the Colorado Court of Appeals.

John Lewis Laskey has been admitted to practice in Pennsylvania as well as the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. He is a shareholder with Stark & Stark in Marlton, N.J., where he focuses his practice on creditors’ rights and litigation.

Mary Nash Rusher recently became president and board chair of the YMCA of the Triangle, the first woman to hold that position in the organization’s 150-plus year history. She is with Hunton & Williams in Raleigh, N.C., where she is managing partner and partner in the public finance group, focusing her practice on tax-exempt transactions. “I’m looking forward to seeing old friends at the reunion,” she writes.

Willis P. Whichard LL.M., S.J.D. ’94 is serving a three-year term on the American Bar Association Standing Committee on the Federal Judiciary. The committee performs a thorough investigation of every prospective nominee to a federal judgeship and provides a rating to the president and, upon nomination, to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and the U.S. Department of Justice.

1985

Martha N. Donovan is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in environmental and litigation-environmental law and in Chambers USA 2013 in environmental law. She is with Norris McLaughlin & Marcus in Bridgewater, N.J., where she focuses her practice on environmental law and complex litigation, particularly the defense of environmental property damage claims.

Stephen E. NoonaStephen E. Noona has been inducted into the 2014 class of fellows of the Virginia Law Foundation. He is a partner with Kaufman & Canoles in Norfolk, where he is chair of the litigation section and serves as co-chair of the intellectual property and franchising section. He is a fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, former president of the Virginia State Bar’s intellectual property law section and the Tidewater Federal Bar Association, and the current president of the I’Anson-Hoffman American Inn of Court.

1986

Richard J. Giusto '86Richard J. Giusto has been appointed to the board of trustees of the non-profit Miami Foundation, where he will help shape the greater Miami area through leadership and philanthropy. He is co-managing shareholder of Greenberg Traurig in Miami, where he concentrates his practice on commercial real estate transactions, leasing, and corporate transactions. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in real estate law.

Bruce Hamilton and Jennifer Weiss traveled to Portland, Ore., in November and enjoyed visiting Margaret Murphy Carley and her family.

Bret Madole '86Bret Madole has joined Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal in Dallas, Tex., as head of corporate and mergers & acquisitions. His practice includes general corporate transactional work, M&A, banking, bank lending, and intellectual property, including copyrights, trademarks, and licensing. He was previously with David, Goodman & Madole.

Aiden P. O’Connor '86Aiden P. O’Connor is listed in Chambers USA 2014 in white-collar crime and government investigations in New Jersey. He is a member of the litigation department with Pashman Stein in Hackensack, where he concentrates on complex civil litigation, criminal defense, and internal investigations, including securities fraud. He was previously an assistant U.S. attorney in the district of New Jersey for 18 years, serving in the criminal division, the organized crime strike force, and as chief of the violent crimes unit. He was named a New Jersey Super Lawyer for 2013-14 in criminal defense: white collar, business litigation, and general litigation.

Jeffrey A. Standen has been named dean of the Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law and professor of law. He was previously the associate dean for academic affairs and faculty research and held the Van Winkle Melton professorship in law at Willamette University College of Law. He has taught as a visiting professor and has been a scholar-in-residence at the University of San Diego and the University of Virginia, respectively.

1987

Keith N. Cole has been appointed vice president, government relations and environment, health, and safety at W.R. Grace & Co. and will be responsible for Grace’s EHS and public affairs activities worldwide. He is at the company’s global headquarters in Columbia, Md.

David K. Spiro '87David K. Spiro is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in bankruptcy and creditor debtor rights/insolvency and reorganization law and was included among the top 100 in Virginia in Super Lawyers 2013. He is a shareholder and co-chair of the bankruptcy and creditors’ rights practice group with Hirschler Fleischer in Richmond.

James Strawbridge joined Cooley as a partner in its business department. He will be a member of the firm's business & finance practice group and will be resident in the Palo Alto office.

1988

John Cooper moved his law firm to a new building in the Ghent section of Norfolk, Va. Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers is now located at 2014 Granby St., Suite 200, Norfolk, Va. 23517.

Frank R. Marvin has joined The Buller Group, a global human capital services firm, as executive vice president of corporate development. He will lead efforts to raise capital, arrange banking facilities, oversee legal and contract matters, and handle merger and acquisition matters. He was previously CEO with M3COM of Virginia, a government contract and commercial services company.

James F. Williams James F. Williams was recently elected to the American Law Institute. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in commercial litigation and in Washington Super Lawyers 2014 in business litigation, personal injury-products, and civil litigation. Williams has been trying cases and managing litigation for more than 25 years as a government attorney and a private practitioner. He is a partner in the litigation practice with Perkins Coie in Seattle, Wash.

1989

John M. Guynn '89John M. Guynn was recently elected to the board at Workman Nydegger, where he is a shareholder. He is in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he focuses on patent law.




George B. Harris
was recognized as a top-rated lawyer in international law and international trade in 2013 by Martindale-Hubbell based on his AV peer review rating, the highest rating in legal ability and ethical standards according to ALM Media. He is general counsel and U.S. director of governmental affairs of SoZo Group, an investment advisory firm that facilitates international trade and business issues.

Cal Mayo was inducted as a fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers at the association’s 2013 annual meeting in San Francisco, Calif. He is a partner with Mayo Mallett in Oxford, Miss., where he focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation and dispute resolution.

Stuart A. Raphael was appointed Solicitor General of Virginia by Attorney General Mark Herring and was sworn in on January 11. Prior to his appointment, Raphael was a partner with Hunton & Williams in McLean, where he focused on complex trial and appellate litigation, state and local government law, product liability, water rights, and energy and environmental litigation.

Paul S. Wilson was promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps at a ceremony at Fort Belvoir, Va., on January 23. He was nominated for promotion by President Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

Wilson has served in the corps for more than 24 years. His assignments include chief, international and operational law division; staff judge advocate, XVIII Airborne Corps; executive officer, U.S. Army Legal Services Agency; and staff judge advocate, 82nd Airborne Division. He has deployed to Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom and to Iraq in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has also served as director of the Center for Law and Military Operations, deputy staff judge advocate, 101st Airborne Division, and as a professor of international and operational law at the Naval War College. “Colonel Wilson’s remarkable legal skills, matched with his soldier ethos, make him a perfect choice to be a general officer in our Army,” noted the announcement for his nomination.

Brig. Gen. Charles N. Pede ’87 and Brig. Gen. Richard C. Gross ’93 attended the ceremony. Three of the four brigadier generals on active duty in the Army JAG Corps are graduates of the Law School.
