1970

greeneKenneth M. Greene is listed in Chambers USA 2013, receiving the highest ranking for North Carolina in banking and finance for the seventh consecutive year. He is listed in North Carolina Super Lawyers 2013 in banking and Best Lawyers 2014 in banking and finance law, bankruptcy and creditor debtor rights/insolvency and reorganization law, and equipment finance law. Greene is a director and shareholder with Carruthers & Roth in Greensboro.

Hunter R. Hughes III was named in Human Resource Executive’s list of 100 Most Powerful Employment Attorneys in the nation for 2013, and Chambers USA 2013 listed him as top ranked. Best Lawyers 2014 named him Atlanta Lawyer of the Year in mediation. He was listed in Best Lawyers in six other areas as well: arbitration, bet-the company litigation, corporate law, employment law-management, litigation-labor & employment, and securities/capital markets law. Hughes is a partner with Rogers & Hardin in Atlanta.

1971

boswellBill Boswell was named the 2013 Outstanding Non-Profit Counsel of the Year by the American Bar Association for his work as general counsel of the North American Energy Standards Board, which sets the business practices and transactional protocols in the electric and natural gas industries in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, and for his years of service to the 811 (underground damage prevention) industry in the U.S. and internationally since 1978. The award was presented by the business law section at the ABA’s annual meeting in August. He was also honored in May by the Pennsylvania State Association of Boroughs for 30 years of distinguished elected public service, the last 16 of them as mayor of Glen Osborne.

Thomas Bottini is resident partner and managing attorney of the Armstrong Teasdale Asian office in Shanghai, where he has been for the past 18 months. The firm serves clients from Japan to Singapore to India, as well as China.

Daniel J. Mulcahy recently won the Burton Award for Distinguished Writing for his article, “FATCA May Open Pandora’s Box of Civil and Criminal Tax Liability.” The award was presented at the 14th Anniversary Program of the Burton Awards at the Library of Congress in June. Mulcahy is senior counsel in the tax department at Cadwalader Wickersham & Taft in Washington, D.C.

1972

Howard E. Gordon is listed in Chambers USA 2013, Virginia Super Lawyers 2013, and Best Lawyers 2014 in real estate. He is a partner at Williams Mullen in Norfolk, where his practice focuses on commercial and multi-family real estate, commercial leases, ground leases, land use planning, and permits and pass-through entities.

millerTerrance M. Miller recently published a new edition of his book, Products Liability Depositions, a handy resource for legal doctrines across the U.S. that can often be applied in product liability cases. (See In Print.) Miller is chair of the product liability practice group with Porter Wright in Columbus, Ohio. He was recognized by Best Lawyers 2014 as Columbus Lawyer of the Year in professional malpractice law-defendants.  

Alan D. Rose is managing partner at Rose, Chinitz & Rose, a litigation firm he started with his son in Boston, Mass., in 1995. He recently completed his appointment as chair of the First Circuit Court of Appeals rules advisory committee. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, criminal defense-white collar, education law, and litigation-labor and employment.

adamsonEric Adamson was awarded the Rotary International Regional Service Award for a Polio Free World by the Rotary Foundation Board of Trustees of Rotary International. The award was presented by Wilf Wilkinson, past president of Rotary International, and chairman of the foundation trustees. The Rotary Foundation has annual receipts of approximately $150 million dollars and recently was given $355 million by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for polio eradication, Rotary’s signature corporate project.

baileyW. Edward Bailey has joined Maynard Cooper & Gale in Birmingham, Ala., as of counsel in the intellectual property litigation practice group. He focuses his practice on intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

Linda Howard has been named general counsel for Landmark, a global company that provides personal and professional training and development headquartered in San Francisco, Calif.

After graduating from the Law School, Benson Legg spent 16 years as a business litigator at Venable, Baetjer and Howard. In 1992 he became a judge on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland. After 21 years on the bench, he retired in 2013 and joined JAMS (formerly called Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services). As a “neutral,” he serves as a mediator and arbitrator. He also evaluates cases.

Brian C. Murphy has devoted his career since the fall of state socialism for the rule of law in the world today. In so doing, he has worked in about a dozen countries, including recently in Afghanistan and Iraq. He expects to continue to do so, hopefully again as a Fulbright lecturer in law, this time in the Republic of Macedonia.

smallJohn H. Small received the Martin I. Lubaroff Award from the American Bar Association’s business law section for his leadership in the areas of limited partnership and limited liability company law.



1974

John H. Foote has been recognized by Best Lawyers 2013 as Washington, D.C. Lawyer of the Year in litigation-land use & zoning. He was also included among the top 100 lawyers in the D.C. area by Super Lawyers. He is a shareholder with Walsh Colucci Lubeley Emrich & Walsh in Prince William, Va., where his practice focuses on obtaining land use approvals and governmental permits through legislative, administrative, and judicial processes.

stanleyBruce M. Stanley Sr. is listed in 2013 Florida Super Lawyers in personal injury defense and medical malpractice and Best Lawyers 2014 in personal injury defense litigation. He is a stockholder with Henderson, Franklin, Starnes & Holt in Fort Myers.

waldronJay Waldron recently received an Outstanding Legal Service Award from Northwest Pulp and Paper Association for providing more than ten years of outstanding legal service to the organization. He is a shareholder with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in Portland, Ore., where he focuses his practice on environmental law, energy law, and litigation.

walesRoss E. Wales is in Best Lawyers 2014 in international trade and finance law. He is a partner in the business and finance department of Taft Stettinius & Hollister in Cincinnati, Ohio, and chair of the firm’s international practice area.

walshKevin J. Walsh was listed in 2013 Super Lawyers for the New York Metro Area in civil litigation and international business litigation and recognized as a noted practitioner for insurance and reinsurance disputes in Chambers USA 2013. Kevin is a partner with Locke Lord.

Thomas R. Bagby is president of the Virginia Bar Association for 2013. He was named in Virginia Super Lawyers 2013 as one of the top 100 lawyers in Virginia. He is president of Woods Rogers in Roanoke, Va.

Jack W. Bettman serves on the Florida Bar general practice, solo, and small firm section executive council. In April he began a second term as president of the Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Association of Northeast Florida.

Kathleen M. Burke is chair of the health law section of the New York State Bar Association. She is vice president-board relations, secretary, and counsel to New York Presbyterian Hospital.

William C. Cleveland III is listed in Chambers USA 2013 in general commercial litigation and South Carolina Super Lawyers 2013 in business litigation. He was recognized by Best Lawyers 2014 as Charleston Lawyer of the Year in litigation-intellectual property and was also listed for mediation and commercial, real estate, and securities litigation. He is with Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice in Charleston.

Elizabeth A. Ritvo

1977

Julian “Bo” Bobbitt presented a talk entitled, “Aligning Incentives in ACOs: Best Practices in Shared Savings Distributions—What Will Really Work” to the National Association of Accountable Care Organizations at its fall conference in Baltimore. Bobbitt is a partner at Smith Anderson in Raleigh, N.C., and head of the health care practice. He has earned national recognition for his efforts to lead the industry through the transition toward value-based care. He is listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in health care law.

caseyPaul K. Casey was honored with the 2013 Michael Scher Award by the American Bar Association Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development Law. The award goes to an attorney who demonstrates outstanding leadership and legal skill and who has made significant contributions in the field of affordable housing. Casey is a partner with Ballard Spahr in Baltimore, Md., where he co-chairs the housing group and handles real estate finance and public finance transactions with an emphasis on affordable housing, public housing law, and federal housing programs. Much of his practice is devoted to mixed-finance public housing development.

chatzinoffHoward Chatzinoff received the PENCIL Public Schools Champion Award at Imagine What We Can Do, a gala event at the Museum of Natural History in May to benefit PENCIL. PENCIL is a nonprofit based in New York City that taps business expertise to create innovative programs that improve school and student performance. For more than 15 years Chatzinoff has worked at both the school level and the broader organizational level to help connect schools and business leaders with positive results. He was recently elected chair of PENCIL’s board of directors and previously served as vice-chair. Chatzinoff is a partner with Weil, Gotshal & Manges in New York City.

Stephen W. Earp has been recognized in Chambers USA 2013 as a leader in environmental law and Best Lawyers 2014 in litigation-environmental. He is with Smith Moore Leatherwood in Greensboro, N.C., where he advises companies in mergers and acquisitions, contracts, and corporate governance. He also handles complex environmental litigation and regulatory matters.

David A. Logan, dean of the Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, R.I., has announced he will step down at the end of the academic year and return to teaching full-time. He has led the school for 11 years, which puts him among the longest-serving law deans in the U.S. During his tenure, which spans half the school’s history, key learning opportunities were put in place, including the groundbreaking Pro Bono Collaborative, the Immigration Clinic, and the In-House Counsel Externship program, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to work in an externship or clinic setting before graduation.

After 35 years with the same firm, David L. Sfara has joined two new partners to form the firm of Giuliano Richardson & Sfara in Woodbury, Conn. His partners are trial attorneys, and Sfara continues with his trusts and estates practice.

He is also listed in Best Lawyers 2014 in personal injury and medical malpractice and recognized as Richmond Lawyer of the Year in personal injury litigation-plaintiffs. He is president of Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana & Buckner in Richmond.

Michael P. Haggerty is listed in Texas Super Lawyers 2013 and recognized in D Magazine’s Best Lawyers in Dallas list for 2013. He is also listed in Best Lawyers in America 2014 in real estate law. He is partner and co-head of the Jackson Walker finance practice group.

George N. Meros Jr. is listed in Florida Super Lawyers 2013 in civil litigation defense. He is with GrayRobinson in Tallahassee, where he focuses his practice on matters involving regulatory compliance, complex civil litigation, and government affairs.

morantBlake Morant has been honored with the Chief Justice John Marshall Lifetime Achievement Award from the Judge Advocate Association and recognized by The National Jurist as one of the top 25 Legal Educators in the United States. He is the dean of Wake Forest Law School.

Joseph W. Ryan, Jr. just completed his three-year term as president-elect, president, and immediate past president of the International Association of Defense Counsel, during which he and his wife, Mary Pat, got to meet wonderful people, travel the world, and among other things, arrange for all IADC members to have training in CPR. About three months after the training, one of the IADC board members used those skills to save the life of a man who had been playing tennis on a nearby court and suddenly fell unconscious. Joe, Mary Pat, and members of the IADC are all big fans of CPR classes now. After 41 years of marriage, Joe and Mary Pat will turn 65 this summer. Mary Pat has retired (mostly) from her position as Manager of Social Work at Children’s Hospital, and Joe is thinking about joining her in a year or so. Their daughter, Caitlin, is a professor of education at East Carolina University, and their son, Joby ’05 has just accepted the position of director of career services at the Law School after practicing in Washington, D.C., with Hogan Lovells. “Everyone is healthy, active, and involved.”

Andy Wright joined Polsinelli Shughart as a shareholder in Washington, D.C. He provides strategic planning, consulting, and lobbying services to the firm’s energy, environment, and telecommunications clients. Andy was recently honored as one of Washington’s Top Lobbyists by The Hill.

1979

H. Aubrey Ford III is included in Best Lawyers 2014 in legal malpractice law, commercial litigation, bet-the-company litigation, and labor & employment law and has been named Best Lawyers 2014 as Richmond Lawyer of the Year in employment law-individuals. Ford is a partner with Cantor Stoneburner Ford Grana and Buckner.
