Albemarle County Adult Education ESOL - English for Speakers of Other Languages Program

The Albemarle County Adult Education ESOL Program offers general English classes with year-round registration for beginner- to advanced-level students. The program also offers beginner-, intermediate- and advanced-level daytime classes in communications skills and TOEFL preparation classes. The ESOL Program has also received recognition for "The Web Project." 

Literacy Volunteers of Charlottesville/Albemarle

LVCA provides one-on-one, confidential tutoring in basic literacy and English as a second language to adults living or working in Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Volunteers are needed as tutors. Free training is provided.

Speak! Language Center

Based in downtown Charlottesville, Speak! offers a variety of small group and individual language courses and training services for students of all ages and learning levels in foreign languages and ESL.


Boys and Girls Club of Charlottesville/Albemarle

Helps youths ages 6-18 with their homework and hosts many educational, social and recreational programs. Volunteer tutors are needed.

Camp Holiday Trails
400 Holiday Trails Lane

This summer camp serves chronically ill children ages 7-17, providing a rustic outdoors experience with 24-hour medical care. Volunteers are needed for gardening, landscaping, maintenance, clearing, construction, clerical chores and general labor.

This nonprofit provides qualified professional counseling and other services related to the issues of poverty, child abuse and neglect, marriage and parenting, child care quality, teen runaways and early learning.


Computers4Kids is a nonprofit after-school technology mentoring program for underserved middle and high school youth. Mentors should have basic computer knowledge and be able to spend one and a half hours per week volunteering. To join, visit and fill out the volunteer application.

Piedmont Family YMCA

The YMCA offers aerobics for adults and seniors, martial arts for adults and children, and basketball for children. Fees vary by activity. The Y offers a full-time care center for preschool-age children as well as a summer camp and a ski program for youth. It also administers the city swim team. Call for details.
