Course Description

This course focuses on legal writing technique, going beyond the first year LRW program to develop writing skills that can be used to produce seminar papers, law review notes, policy papers, and other forms of advanced legal writing. Topics include: developing a compelling thesis; striking the right tone; structuring the argument; providing supporting evidence; and engaging the audience from beginning to end. The class will also cover developing successful research strategies, managing time, and effective outlining and drafting.

Written Work Product

Students will research a topic and write portions of an academic paper: an outline, an introduction, and other key paragraphs, such as an introduction to counterarguments. The assignments will be based in academic writing but will develop essential skills for writing a compelling and readable argument in any form: a note, a brief, an op-ed, a policy paper.
